Kaktus

Mixed Breed · Female · Young · 1 year

Mixed-breed Cactus—a little female dog with a big heart—is looking for her happy ending. Cactus is a small, sensitive puppy who, despite a challenging start in life, has retained a gentle and courageous nature. At a manageable size of about 30 cm tall and weighing around 6 kg, she fits into many different living situations and is now finally longing for her own forever home. At first, Cactus approaches people with a bit of caution, but once she’s gained trust, she thoroughly enjoys being close to her humans. She’s affectionate, cuddly, and loves spending quality time together. She gets along wonderfully with other dogs and happily looks up to them. Therefore, we’d like to find her a home where a friendly dog already lives. Cactus still needs a medication that keeps her well-balanced and allows her to handle her daily life without any issues. She no longer requires a hypoallergenic diet. Particularly noteworthy are her many positive qualities: Cactus shows absolutely no hunting instinct and can therefore stroll peacefully through forests and meadows. Moreover, she doesn’t shed. Inside the home, she proves to be pleasant and easygoing, thoroughly enjoying the security and comfort of a loving family environment. We’re looking for a calm, understanding home for Cactus—one where her new owners can give her the time she needs to settle in and build trust. Dog-experienced cat owners are welcome. Small children, however, should ideally not live in the household, as Cactus prefers a quieter environment. If you give this special little dog a chance, you’ll gain a loyal companion with an enormous heart. If this little sweetheart has captured your heart, please get in touch with her foster carer and come meet her in person. Click here for Cactus’ video. Click here for Video 2.

About Kaktus

What life with Kaktus looks like

Kaktus is a large young adult mixed breed dog waiting at SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. in Germany.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Kaktus, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Kaktus?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Kaktus on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Kaktus if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Kaktus already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Kaktus isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Kaktus and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
