Kal

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 8 years

Kal lives in a pension in Patras / Greece. VIDEOS AVAILABLE !!! male dog/castrated born. ca. June 2018 Size: ca. 43 cm Kal and his brother escaped a major fire in 2021 and both came to the local animal shelter in Patras. His brother passed away, leaving Kal alone and sad. Unfortunately, the staff at the animal shelter did not properly attend to Kal’s health. A few years ago, he tested positive for leishmaniasis and received a daily tablet for many years. For the staff at the animal shelter, it was apparently normal that a large wound on Kal’s front paw was not treated, and the poor puppy limped in pain while they merely dusted powder on the wound. In June last year, an animal rescuer discovered Kal during a visit to Patras and asked us for help. Immediately, Kal was taken to the vet, where a blood test revealed that Kal also had heartworms, which is why the paw wound did not heal. Of course, treatment for the heartworms was started immediately, and the paw wound healed quickly. Now that Kal has successfully completed the treatment, he lives in a local pension where he is lovingly cared for. We are now looking for people to give Kal a home after all these years of not experiencing much good. We want to show him that dog life has many beautiful sides to offer. Of course, Kal will need a lot of time to adjust to his new home, where the love and patience of his family are indispensable. Kal is vaccinated, microchipped, and dewormed. Additionally, he has his own EU pet passport in his luggage when he arrives in Germany.

About Kal

What life with Kal looks like

Kal is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierfreunde Patras e.V. in Ratingen.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Dogs and cats typically leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with an EU pet passport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Kal, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Kal?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierfreunde Patras e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Kal on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Kal if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierfreunde Patras e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Kal already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Kal isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierfreunde Patras e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Kal and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
