Adopt Kalico

Female

Kalico PP Species: Lesser Sulphur Crested Cockatoo Name: Kalico Adoption Fee: £275 Location: South Wales Cage Supplied: I'll need a large new one please! Meet Kalico… the dancing, laughing shadow who just wants to be where the love is Kalico is a stunning Sulphur-Crested Cockatoo with a full head of beautiful feathers, a huge personality, and enough charm to keep you smiling all day long. Handsome, intelligent, funny, and affectionate, Kalico is the kind of bird who makes his presence known wherever he goes. One of Kalico's favourite things in the world is Curious George. Put it on for him and you'll have his full attention! And he will watch it for hours. He also loves music and dancing and is always ready to join in if there's fun to be had. Add in his infectious laugh and cheeky sense of humour, and you'll quickly see why everyone falls in love with him. He is quite the comedian and seems to know exactly when he's being mischievous. Tell him not to do something and there's a good chance he'll look right at you and laugh, as if he's in on the joke. His playful personality shines through in everything he does, and he always seems determined to keep his humans entertained. If I’m sat by the cage and he wants attention he will stick his beak out and stroke his head. He is a proper character. Kalico has formed a very strong bond with his Safe House Mum and loves spending his days by her side. He enjoys climbing all over his cage, playing with his toys, exploring his surroundings, loves pecking away at boxes in his cage even though he’s fully unaware he’s making a mess, and flying confidently around his safe house. He’ll happily fly over to his chosen person whenever he gets the chance because, for Kalico, life is simply better when he’s with someone he loves. Being close to his person is very important to him. In fact, as soon as he’s left on his own, Kalico is more than happy to make his feelings known! His favourite trick is mimicking his Safe House Mum’s child shouting “MAM!” at full volume, ensuring nobody forgets he’s waiting for company. Then if he’s ignored he will let of a high pitched scream until he had his attention. Kalico is a clever boy with a wonderful sense of humour. He loves interaction, enjoys being involved in daily life, and thrives on attention and companionship. If you’re looking for a bird who wants to be part of the family, Kalico certainly fits the bill. Food-wise? Kalico enjoys: * Johnson & Jeff low sunflower seed mix * A variety of vegetables * Nuts as treats * Mashed vegetables and other soft foods * Trying new foods when offered patiently * banana chips (his absolute favourite) Like many cockatoos, he’s always keen to investigate what’s on offer and enjoys sharing mealtimes with his favourite humans. Things Kalico doesn’t like… * Men. Kalico is very wary of men and can bite if he feels uncomfortable or threatened. * Being left alone. If he’s feeling lonely, you’ll definitely hear about it! * Other birds. Due to negative experiences in the past, Kalico is fearful and cautious around them and prefers to keep his distance. Kalico is currently working hard with his Safe House Mum to build trust and positive relationships. He is making progress, but always on his terms and at his pace. In his safe house, Kalico has shown a strong tendency to bond deeply with one person, and currently that person is his Safe House Mum. Any potential adopter should be prepared to invest time, patience, and understanding while allowing Kalico to choose and build that special relationship naturally. ⸻ In summary: Kalico is affectionate, funny, intelligent, playful, and incredibly devoted. He is looking for a home where he can be a true companion, spending lots of time with his chosen person and being included in everyday life. If you’re looking for a feathered best friend who loves to dance, laugh, watch Curious George, and be by your side through it all, Kalico may be the perfect addition to your family. Just be prepared… if you leave the room, you might suddenly hear a very loud “MAM!” echoing through the house . If you are interested in adopting Kalico click the button below! About Kalico

What life with Kalico looks like

Kalico is a extra-large adult bird waiting at Problem Parrots in United Kingdom.

Birds are long-lived, social, and noisy. The species and individual history matter enormously — ex-companion parrots can carry strong attachments and trauma. Ask the shelter about their daily routine, diet, and whether they'd do best alone or with a flockmate.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Kalico, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Kalico?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Problem Parrots handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Kalico on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Kalico if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Problem Parrots will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Kalico already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most birds on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Kalico isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Problem Parrots early rather than rehoming privately; they know Kalico and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
