Kashtanka (Каштанка)

Mixed Breed · Female · Puppy

Chestnut — an incredibly beautiful dog. Soon it will already be a year since she has been living in our our shelter. But in this year, she has not fully learned to trust people yet. However, changes are happening. Today, she can already approach very closely, and sometimes even press against her legs. One can cautiously touch her nose or try to stroke her muzzle. For most dogs, this is a small step. For Chestnut, it is a huge step. And this is the reason. When we met Chestnut, she was living with her brother in the bushes near the road. Once, they were simply left there abandoned. The little puppies survived on their own, without a home and without protection. They lived there for more than three months. There were several attempts to catch them. Her brother gradually began to trust people. He already approached closer, allowed to be stroked, and became more social. This was a wonderful, good, and very beautiful little dog. One day, they found her brother shot. Chestnut was not with him. At first, we thought she had also died. But after hearing her bark from far in the bushes, she stopped trusting people completely. If before she stayed several meters away, now she did not approach even ten meters. She came to the food only when she was sure that the people had long gone and no one was nearby. To save Chestnut, we had to buy a dogcatcher. My husband tried to catch her for three days straight. Her fear was so strong that even a hungry puppy, which hadn't eaten or drunk for a long time, did not dare to go into the pasture for food. Only on the third day did she manage to be caught. And since then, we have been trying to earn her trust every day. Chestnut grew into a large dog and continues to mature. She gets along well with other animals, loves company, and especially befriends our Patrick. She also gets along well with cats. She has excellent guard qualities, is attentive to everything happening around, and always controls her territory. That is why Chestnut will make a wonderful dog for a private home with a spacious yard. But most importantly, what she needs is a person who will not demand immediate trust from her. A person who will understand what she has gone through and will give her as much time as she needs. Chestnut will definitely learn to trust. She is already making steps towards it. Just her path to a person is much longer than in most dogs. And it is very much hoped that at the end of this path, there will be her own family waiting for her.

About Kashtanka (Каштанка)

What life with Kashtanka (Каштанка) looks like

Kashtanka (Каштанка) is a large puppy/kitten mixed breed dog waiting at Happy Paw Dnipro in Ukraine.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

Frequently asked

Adopting Kashtanka (Каштанка), answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Kashtanka (Каштанка)?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Happy Paw Dnipro handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Kashtanka (Каштанка) on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Kashtanka (Каштанка) if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Happy Paw Dnipro will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Kashtanka (Каштанка) already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Kashtanka (Каштанка) isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Happy Paw Dnipro early rather than rehoming privately; they know Kashtanka (Каштанка) and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (UK). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
