Kemo

Mixed Breed · Male · Senior · 9 years

A large handicapped giant dog named Kemo was found in Turkey with both legs broken and had surgery, but the plates and screws in his leg did not heal, causing him great pain throughout his life. The large male dog with prominent eyebrows arrived with four legs after his rescue, but had significant problems. Initially, we debated an operation, but ultimately decided, together with our veterinarian and a specialist, to amputate the damaged leg because it severely limited him. Everything healed well, and we considered a wheelchair helpful for walks. Through WhatsApp, a great connection was made, and everything progressed! Sascha, our leash hero, took care of Kemo's new wheelchair, and together with Jessica from Rollin’ Dogs, they created a perfect wheelchair adapted to Kemo in 2021. Over time, it turned out that Kemo was not a fan, so he preferred to walk on three legs. Currently, he is the three-legged farm king at the animal shelter Gelnhausen. Kemo is very social with dogs in the group, interrupting dog fights without being aggressive and resolving conflicts. He is vigilant but still very open with people, can integrate well, and is familiar with his known people, being very cuddly with them. Of course, his health issue must be considered. Here come the necessary requirements for such a dog: His adapted wheelchair is still available, and it should be continuously practiced with him, which might help improve his fitness. Currently, we cannot establish a regular physiotherapy program at the animal shelter due to the operational schedule and influx. His home should be barrier-free. Given his size and weight, the owners should also be physically capable of transporting Kemo in emergencies (lifting or carrying). Additionally, a supporting physiotherapy would be important to alleviate one-sided strain. As an older dog, it is likely that joint issues will arise, which need to be considered and treated, and his current health status should be evaluated and treated daily. Kemo, the matchmaker, was born on 01.08.2017, mixed breed, type HSH-Pointer, large. At the animal shelter since 16.02.21, male, neutered. Surrender reason: animal welfare adoption. With cats? unknown. With children? yes. As a second dog? yes.

About Kemo

What life with Kemo looks like

Kemo is a extra-large senior mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutz Kinzig-Main e.V. (Tierheim Gelnhausen) in Germany.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Kemo, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Kemo?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutz Kinzig-Main e.V. (Tierheim Gelnhausen) handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Kemo on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Kemo if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutz Kinzig-Main e.V. (Tierheim Gelnhausen) will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Kemo already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Kemo isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutz Kinzig-Main e.V. (Tierheim Gelnhausen) early rather than rehoming privately; they know Kemo and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
