Kenji

Mixed Breed · Male · Young · 1 year

Kenji is a Sharplaninec who arrived at the shelter completely broken from fear. For the first few days, he didn't walk - he crawled. He was so afraid of people, leashes and everything that was unfamiliar to him that he tried to make himself as small as possible and just disappear from the situation that scared him. Along with the fear, he arrived extremely thin. But Kenji has shown us in the meantime how much can change when a dog is given time, patience and a sense of security. Today he is a completely different dog. He has learned to walk on a leash, he trusts people more and becomes more confident in himself every day. He even made a big step outside the safety of the shelter, we took him to the city, among people, cars, sounds and everything that was completely unknown to him until recently. And he was excellent. He currently weighs about 37 kilograms, but he still needs to gain a few kilograms to reach his ideal weight. We are looking for a calm and responsible home for Kenji, people who understand large dogs and who will not rush what is so beautiful he started building, his trust. His future owner will not get a dog who knew from the first day that the world is a safe place. He will get a dog who had to learn that he no longer needs to be afraid. And watching Kenji walk proudly on a leash today, after he could once crawl from fear, maybe best speaks of how far he has already come. Now he only needs his home.

HR·Show original

About Kenji

What life with Kenji looks like

Kenji is a young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Azil Dubrovnik in Croatia.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇭🇷Adopting from Croatia

Croatian shelters include sterilization, vaccinations, and microchip ID in the adoption process. Several work with Italian and German rescue networks for placements.

Frequently asked

Adopting Kenji, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Kenji?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Azil Dubrovnik handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Kenji on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Kenji if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Azil Dubrovnik will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Kenji already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Kenji isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Azil Dubrovnik early rather than rehoming privately; they know Kenji and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (HR). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
