Kiara

Mixed Breed · Female · Senior · 10 years

Kiara is a 10-year-old (as of 03/2023) female shepherd dog. She came into the care of our friends from Dolmen Animal in February of this year. Her family gave the extremely affectionate girl to the animal protectors, explaining that a move was coming and they could not take Kiara with them. At that time, the nearly 60cm tall female dog weighed only 16kg and was little more than skin and bones. Her owners said this was because Kiaras long-time four-legged friend had died and she was very sad. However, our friends wanted to make sure that there was nothing medical behind Kiaras really concerning condition and had her examined thoroughly. The good news was that Kiara is in excellent health for her age. At the same time, it became clear that she was always looking for food at the animal shelter - not a day went by when she didn't mourn her family or was prevented from eating. We suspect that her owners simply no longer had any interest in her and often forgot to feed her... Kiaras fixation on food has remained unchanged to this day, although she has come to understand that she can rely on regular meals and no longer has to fear starving. Now, Kiara is at the animal shelter and has the chance to start over. She is still very athletic and fit, likes to play with her companions and is delighted when the animal welfare workers from Dolmen have time for her. Kiara is extremely obedient and likes to please. She loves working on small tricks and is happy with every praise and recognition. We know that the decision to adopt an old dog is not an easy one and requires special people. But just our gray snouts often have so much left to give, and in Kiaras case, you get a truly athletic grandma who certainly still enjoys long walks and adapted play. On the other hand, Kiara is used to being alone, knows the life in the house, and is long past the age when shoes are destroyed and furniture is bitten - whoever opens the door for Kiara gets a friend who will probably arrive very quickly and can immediately show her qualities as a hot water bottle, outdoor companion, garden helper, and lone person. Kiara does not need a breed-experienced family, but simply loving people who would like to give her some more beautiful years.

About Kiara

What life with Kiara looks like

Kiara is a small senior mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Kiara, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Kiara?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Kiara on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Kiara if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Kiara already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Kiara isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Kiara and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
