KIKA

Female · Adult · 8 years

9 shar-pei dogs were rescued from a neglect situation. They were used for illegal breeding and selling. They are all very scared and nervous. They now live in a pack in a large park where they feel safe in the Corner. The KIKA is the most sociable of them all but still very shy. She has already placed her trust in some people at the shelter who can give her cuddles, put on the leash, and walk with her. But if a stranger approaches, she runs away. However, there is no aggression. The KIKA is submissive. If she does not feel comfortable, she tries to run away, without harming anyone. The KIKA was once in a temporary foster care family when she had to undergo treatment, but she does not like being alone at all. She gets very restless. She is very agile and can jump over quite high fences. She cannot be left in a yard without supervision. However, when she has company, she loves to take sun baths outside. She is calm. We know that this is almost an impossible adoption, but there is always a special family for a special dog.

A Kika é submissa.

About KIKA

What life with KIKA looks like

KIKA is a medium-sized adult dog waiting at O Cantinho da Milu in Lisbon.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

Note from the shelter: Cannot be left alone, requires constant supervision, can jump high fences, needs pack companionship

🇵🇹Adopting from Portugal

Portuguese rescues coordinate extensively with European rescue networks for cross-border placements, especially for galgos and podencos. Sterilization, vaccinations, and microchip ID are standard. Adoption fees typically cover the full vet workup.

Frequently asked

Adopting KIKA, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about KIKA?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. O Cantinho da Milu handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw KIKA on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt KIKA if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — O Cantinho da Milu will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is KIKA already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if KIKA isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with O Cantinho da Milu early rather than rehoming privately; they know KIKA and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (PT). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
