Adopt Klaus

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 4 years

Born: Around the end of 2021 Breed: German Shepherd compatibility with others: Currently shows difficulties in getting along with fellow animals. Current location: animal shelter Duisburg / NRW Surrender reason: Was secured by the police. Klaus is currently in dog training classes. He came to the animal shelter Duisburg in May 2022. His previous owners had tried to make him more sensitive to trees, which resulted in him becoming agitated whenever he approaches trees, fallen branches, etc. He was rescued by the police through animal rescue services. Despite his past, he is a very affectionate and absolutely people-oriented male dog who would go through fire for his people. The problem is that he quickly becomes overwhelmed by distractions (passing cars, people, other dogs, trees, etc.), and it is very important that his new owners provide him with security and calm. In his kennel at the animal shelter, he calms down much better because he is exposed to few external stimuli there. The most helpful for him is when his primary caregiver simply sits with him and gives him the time to find his calm again. Then he can also enjoy extensive cuddles. He is also an enthusiastic swimmer. Klaus needs people with a lot of empathy, time, and patience. An ideal home would be one where he has a low-stress area. A garden with many trees would still be too much for him at the moment, but this is being worked on in training. Klaus learns concentration, head work, and recall in small training sessions when he is excited. Klaus does not defend food or toys against people. Even under great stress and a lot of hectic, he remains peaceful and very affectionate towards people. Other dogs are also not an easy topic for Klaus. On the leash, he reacts extremely to all fellow animals. Loud barking, lunging forward, and full-body engagement characterize his typical behavior in front-line encounters. A meeting with another dog has not yet taken place. Klaus is a soul of a dog that humans have made what they have through improper husbandry.

About Klaus

What life with Klaus looks like

Klaus is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Pföttchenretter mit Herz e.V. in Leichlingen.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Klaus, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Klaus?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Pföttchenretter mit Herz e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Klaus on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Klaus if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Pföttchenretter mit Herz e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Klaus already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Klaus isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Pföttchenretter mit Herz e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Klaus and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
