Adopt Kooper

Mixed Breed · Unknown · Senior · 10 years

Sarplaninac mix Kooper was born around 2016 and is not neutered. Kooper shows typical livestock guardian traits and needs some time to trust strangers. Kooper would also like to introduce himself – here goes, Koopi: Hello, I'm Kooper and I was born in 2016. I am a Sarplaninac mix and one of three livestock guardian dogs that moved in together. Along with my buddies Randy and James, I was seized. At first, we came to another animal shelter – they didn't quite know what to do with us. There was even talk of involving the ethics commission. I don't know exactly what that means, but just the thought gives me goosebumps. Fortunately, Britti took us in and gave us a second chance. Of the three of us, I'm the largest – and yet often the most cautious. I don't immediately trust unfamiliar people; I need some time for that. But when I realize that someone means well, my heart warms up. With Britti, it happened quite quickly. When she comes to me, I feel safe and can just be a dog: playing, romping, clowning around – what a wonderful feeling! And you know what? She even taught me how to give kisses. At first, I found it strange… but now I loooooove it! My friend Randy was braver than I and has already found his home. We're all so happy for him. Now I hope that James and I will soon find our special people. What I wish for? A home where I'm loved, with a family connection and a large garden that I can watch over with watchful eyes. Livestock guarding is in my blood, but right now, I'm learning how wonderful life as a family dog can be. Maybe you are the person who can show me that it's worth it to trust. If so, you'll have a loyal, big, cuddly bear by your side.

Und wisst Ihr was? Was ich mir wünsche?

About Kooper

What life with Kooper looks like

Kooper is a extra-large senior mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Hassberge in Germany.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Kooper, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Kooper?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Hassberge handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Kooper on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Kooper if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Hassberge will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Kooper already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Kooper isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Hassberge early rather than rehoming privately; they know Kooper and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
