La sexualité des chiens, bons à savoir

Mixed Breed · Male

When you own a pet, it's important to know everything about them. In humans, puberty is a fairly critical period of life that is marked by sometimes spectacular physical changes. In dogs, this is visible only through certain behaviors. What should you know about this to be well-prepared for any eventuality? A female dog reaches sexual maturity earlier than a male. Indeed, for most female dogs, the first heat (which translates to the period of fertility for her) generally occurs between the sixth and ninth month of the female dog's life. For the male, it happens a bit later, around the ninth month. How do you know when this moment has arrived? Male sexual maturity can present itself through some signs like marking behavior or small simulations of sexual intercourse on objects. Dogs are capable of mating at any time of the year. However, in females, there are what are called heat periods that occur twice a year. At the beginning of this period, the female dog presents a bloody vaginal discharge. But at the same time, it is noticeable that female dogs can change their behavior during this period: nervous, agitated, clingy. It is also possible that a few days later, she might make a small escape attempt to find a male. It is important to know that breeding a female dog as soon as her first heat occurs is entirely discouraged. Indeed, the female dog will not yet be fully capable of gestation, which, in the case of this happening, constitutes a danger for her. Thus, choose to breed her around the fourth or even the sixth heat period. During this phase, avoid taking your female dog out, dog-sitting, or the presence of a male at home if you do not want a litter in the house. For both males and females, it is important to give them good sexual education to impose limits on their freedoms.
