Laika

Akita · Unknown · Young · 2 years

Meet 2 year old Laika, who we are advertising on behalf of another rescue to help find her a breed experienced forever home. Laika is a typical Akita who absolutely loves her people. She can be aloof with new faces and sometimes a little over the top when meeting strangers, but once she gets to know you, her fun and affectionate personality really shines through. She enjoys her walks, loves to play, and will make a loyal and rewarding companion for the right person. Since arriving with the rescue, Laika has made lots of friends and continues to build her confidence. She is still working on being comfortable with handling in certain areas, particularly her feet, so she will need an Akita savvy home that is confident, experienced, and willing to follow guidance on training and management. Laika loves having off lead time in a secure dog paddock where she can enjoy her zoomies with a favourite toy. If there’s an opportunity to dig, she may well take it! She can find veterinary handling stressful, so she has been fully muzzle trained for vet visits. She also wears her muzzle on walks due to her extremely high prey drive and dog reactivity, although she is making excellent progress and learning to remain calm when passing dogs on lead. Laika is looking for adopters with previous Akita experience, or a strong understanding of the breed, who are prepared to embrace her unique and quirky personality. Laika will require: An adult only home with no visiting children To be the only pet in the home A private, secure garden with 6ft robust fencing No visiting cats to the garden Preferably no dogs in adjacent gardens Laika is up to date with her flea and worming treatments and vaccinations. She will need to return to the rescue at a later date to be spayed. Laika also has a Grade 1 patellar luxation. This is not currently affecting her movement or gait, and no treatment is required at present. However, potential adopters should be aware of the condition, as it may not be covered by pet insurance policies. If you have the experience, patience and understanding to give this wonderful girl the home she deserves, Laika could be your perfect companion.

About Laika

What life with Laika looks like

Laika is a young adult akita dog waiting at Akita Rescue & Welfare Trust UK in United Kingdom.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Laika, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Laika?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Akita Rescue & Welfare Trust UK handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Laika on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Laika if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Akita Rescue & Welfare Trust UK will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Laika already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Laika isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Akita Rescue & Welfare Trust UK early rather than rehoming privately; they know Laika and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
