Layla

Female Β· Young Β· 1 year

We are asking for extra attention for our lovely Layla πŸ’› This beautiful Dutch x Mechelse herder mix, born in December 2024, should be enjoying life to the fullest. Unfortunately, the world is still very overwhelming for Layla at the moment. Due to her fears, she experiences a lot of stress in her daily life, and the stay in the shelter makes that even harder for her. The hustle and bustle and stimuli of the kennel are difficult for her, which is why she is currently receiving support with anxiety-reducing medication. Of course, we are doing everything we can to make her days as pleasant as possible, but what Layla really needs is a quiet home and a person who can provide her with safety. Layla is an incredibly gentle and sensitive dog. Her biggest challenges are being alone, going for walks outside, and encounters with other dogs. When it gets too much for her, she tries to escape the situation or reacts from tension to other dogs. Yet, we see small steps forward every day β€” and that is where so much hope lies. 🌱 With patience, calmness, and trust, Layla is increasingly showing how much she wants to learn that the world can also be safe. She sets the pace herself, and as soon as she feels supported, she relaxes visibly. Therefore, we are looking for a special owner for Layla: 🐾 Someone with experience with herders or sensitive dogs, who can guide her calmly and understandingly. 🐾 Someone who does not have to leave her alone at home in the beginning. 🐾 A quiet household without other animals or small children, so Layla can really land. 🐾 A place where she can safely expend her energy β€” preferably with a quiet environment or space around the house. 🐾 And above all, someone who gets excited about her favorite things in the world: tracking and endless cuddling. πŸ’• Because behind all her uncertainty is a young dog who so badly wants to trust and enjoy. We really hope that somewhere there is someone who wants to give Layla that chance. As soon as she feels safe, you will get an enormously sweet, loyal, and special friend in return.

About Layla

What life with Layla looks like

Layla is a small young adult dog waiting at Stichting Dierentehuis Vijfheerenlanden in LC Leerdam.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" β€” quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures β€” to let them settle.

πŸ‡³πŸ‡±Adopting from Netherlands

Dutch shelters typically require a household assessment and an adoption contract. Animals are routinely sterilized, microchipped, and registered in the national pet database (NDG) before placement.

Frequently asked

Adopting Layla, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Layla?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Stichting Dierentehuis Vijfheerenlanden handles screening and the adoption contract directly β€” TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Layla on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Layla if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad β€” Stichting Dierentehuis Vijfheerenlanden will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Layla already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported β€” ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Layla isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work β€” that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Stichting Dierentehuis Vijfheerenlanden early rather than rehoming privately; they know Layla and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect β€” names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
