Lela

Mixed Breed · Female · Puppy · 8 months

shoulder height: ca 50 cm vaccinated: Grundimmunisierung and Rabies Cat-tolerant: yes Dog-tolerant: yes Children: no, she needs a quiet home Illness: Acupuncture for HD, responds well Lela lived as a street dog on the streets of Croatia and then spent a very long time in an animal shelter. This means that Lela did not know the life, the everyday life, as we live it, for a long time. Initially, Lela was overwhelmed by all the new things and had to learn to cope with new stimuli. Now, Lela has rediscovered her joy in life and is beginning to enjoy life. She is currently undergoing professional behavior training with her foster parent, which has given her much more security. Lela loves walks in the forest and her garden. She also likes to guard her garden when she is allowed to. For Lela, we are looking for people who accept her as she is and who are willing to continue working with her. She is generally friendly and gets along with all dogs and even cats. Lela has learned that not all people are bad. Nevertheless, her past cannot be erased. Despite still having respect for strangers, especially men, Lela is willing to learn and is on a good path. Update of the foster parent: Lela came to me as a foster parent 8 months ago. She was mainly afraid of cars, people, and loud noises. Adjusting to her new life was difficult, and it turned out that she has HD in the back and ED in the front, which caused pain that led to overloading her back and elbows. In January, a specialist performed acupuncture, which significantly reduced her pain. Lela can now live more freely. Where previously every walk was a struggle because of the pain, overloading, and fear, which made the behavior training a tightrope act for both me as a foster parent and Lela, we can now establish a walk route where Lela can enjoy exploring her environment. She loves her treats, which help her to accept challenges like people and cars more easily. The forest is a paradise for her, where one can never have enough to discover, sniff, dig, search for treats, etc. For Lela, I would wish for a home in a very rural area where she does not have to walk on busy roads constantly, where many people regularly go. Lela needs people who can offer her a lot of patience and love because there is still a lot for her to learn. She loves her garden, which she also guards according to her guard dog percentage, and alerts intruders, but she is always available to the person she trusts. She loves the people she trusts and approaches them very gently. She is slowly learning that cuddles are okay, but she can also leave if it gets too much. As a guard dog, it is normal to be skeptical of new things at first. But if she can trust her person and knows that they support her correctly, she can be well led. She likes to go for walks, but because she also has arthritis, she can only manage 1-2 walks per day. She can be alone, and when she can rest here with some gnawing, she is the happiest dog in the world.

About Lela

What life with Lela looks like

Lela is a medium-sized puppy/kitten mixed breed dog waiting at Tierhilfe Oberlandpfoten e. V. in Waakirchen.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Lela, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Lela?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierhilfe Oberlandpfoten e. V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Lela on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Lela if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierhilfe Oberlandpfoten e. V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Lela already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Lela isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierhilfe Oberlandpfoten e. V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Lela and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
