Lena

Mixed Breed · Female · Puppy · 3 months

Lena was abandoned along with her sisters and left to fend for herself. Fortunately, the puppies were found in time and are now safe. What Lena still needs is a home where she can grow up and develop into a wonderful companion. Optically, we suspect Lena is a Šarplaninac mix. Of course, we cannot determine her actual genetic composition with certainty. Therefore, we are looking for people who consciously choose a possible Herdenschutzhund mix and who not only accept but also like and can deal with the corresponding characteristics. The Šarplaninac is one of the original Herdenschutzhunde. These dogs were bred to independently guard herds and their territory and make their own decisions. Typical characteristics can therefore be vigilance, territorial behavior, independence, and a certain reserve towards strangers. At the same time, they can bond very closely with their humans and be loyal and faithful to their family. Since Lena is still young, it is not possible to predict today how pronounced these characteristics will develop in her. It is also possible that she will later have a stronger need to spend a lot of time outdoors. Therefore, a home that offers her this possibility would be ideal - with a securely fenced property and a protected, weather-resistant retreat where she can feel comfortable and come to rest. Of course, she should still be part of her family and have close contact with her humans. Therefore, we are looking for a rural home with enough space and a suitable environment for Lena. A densely populated residential area or a small city apartment is not an optimal condition for a possibly growing Herdenschutzhund. Her future humans should approach her with calmness, patience, consistency, and loving clarity. Lena still needs to learn the dog ABC, be well socialized, and needs people to accompany her through her development and later through puberty. Especially with a large and strong dog, it is important to work early on orientation, leash handling, and a confident handling of different situations. Experience with Herdenschutzhunde would be great. However, what is more important to us is that her future humans know what it means to live with a Herdenschutzhund, are willing to adapt to it, and can offer the right environment. Lena is not just looking for a home, but her place for life - with people who understand and appreciate her special qualities, enough space, and the opportunity to be a dog outside. 🧡

DE·Show original

About Lena

What life with Lena looks like

Lena is a large puppy/kitten mixed breed dog waiting at Fellnasen Stuttgart e.V. in Stuttgart.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Lena, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Lena?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Fellnasen Stuttgart e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Lena on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Lena if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Fellnasen Stuttgart e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Lena already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Lena isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Fellnasen Stuttgart e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Lena and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
