Adopt Leo

Mixed Breed · Male · Young · 2 years

Leo moved to a long-term foster home in August 2024 and would love to have sponsors! He is calm, friendly, and generally well-disposed toward people. He takes his time on walks, strolling calmly on leash without pulling, and isn’t easily deterred from the path he’s chosen. He interacts appropriately and sociably with fellow animals. He’s quite cool and relaxed, and can comfortably be left alone for several hours at a time. Initially wary of strangers, he quickly adapts to new situations. Because he doesn’t like being touched, he needs a home with experienced people who are familiar with dogs requiring muzzles. Unfortunately, he reacts with defensive aggression if touched “too” roughly, touched “too” long, or forced into things. Within the structured routine of the our shelter shelter, Leo goes without a muzzle, happily greeting staff members and enjoying his outdoor exercise time in his enclosure. On walks, however, he is always led wearing a muzzle. He needs a single-level, peaceful retirement home with people who understand him and won’t treat him carelessly. Living well with him is absolutely possible if you respect his need for personal space and occasionally use a muzzle for safety. He has already waited a very long time for a chance—and due to his severely compromised mobility, his remaining time is limited. Unless you know what signs to look for, you might not notice any issues at first glance. We feel deeply sorry for him because, at heart, he’s a genuinely nice and pleasant dog who unfortunately never received proper guidance and learned that aggression brought him success. He never holds grudges and truly just wants peace and to maintain his personal boundaries. We are looking for dog-experienced people—ideally those who also have a female dog. Strangers and children should be kept away from him. We’re happy to support introductions and assist during the initial transition period after adoption. We seek calm, dog-experienced, level-headed individuals with a house and a securely fenced yard. Leo could also live as a property dog with suitable housing adjacent to the living area, though he would still prefer a dog bed inside the living room. But spending his final days in an animal shelter? Perhaps there’s someone out there who can respect and care for a lovable old-timer like Leo. He receives regular pain medication for his mobility issues. About Leo

What life with Leo looks like

Leo is a young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutz Kinzig-Main e.V. (Tierheim Gelnhausen) in Germany.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Leo, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Leo?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutz Kinzig-Main e.V. (Tierheim Gelnhausen) handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Leo on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Leo if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutz Kinzig-Main e.V. (Tierheim Gelnhausen) will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Leo already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Leo isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutz Kinzig-Main e.V. (Tierheim Gelnhausen) early rather than rehoming privately; they know Leo and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
