Adopt Leonek

Mixed Breed · Unknown · Adult · 7 years

Born in 2019, at the shelter since 2021. He is a huge (over 40 kg) and very strong, massive dog of the mastiff type - only for experienced people who know the breed. This is not a dog for a novice! From observations of shelter staff and volunteers, Leon is known as a very positively oriented dog in terms of contact with humans. He is a wonderful companion for quiet walks - after the initial moments of wild excitement when leaving the crate, he then obediently walks on a leash, sniffs, does not react to cars passing by, and looks calmly and curiously at other dogs. Leon also shows no aggression towards new things that might cause unease, but it should be remembered that all these observations were made under shelter conditions. A home without children and other animals is preferred, and the first contact with Leon should be arranged in the presence of a volunteer whom Leon knows and who can handle his strength. Leon's affection must be earned, but once he loves someone, he behaves like a lovely, affectionate dog, unaware of the weight of his powerful body. Volunteer Ada says: during walks, Leon sniffs and tracks a lot, but he also loves moments of affection with a trusted person. He is not aware of his size - he pushes himself onto knees with his whole mass and can be very clumsy then, but I also love that! Encountering something new and unknown (also a new route in an unfamiliar area) is a situation of discomfort for him - he then shows uncertainty and seeks support from his human caregiver, who gives him a gentle touch and makes him feel safe.

About Leonek

What life with Leonek looks like

Leonek is a medium-sized adult mixed breed dog waiting at Schronisko dla Zwierząt w Słupsku in Poland.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇵🇱Adopting from Poland

Polish shelters maintain established transport routes to Germany, Netherlands, Austria, and Sweden. Animals leave sterilized and chipped. Adoption fees are typically lower than in Western Europe (often €50–€150) but adopters cover transport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Leonek, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Leonek?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Schronisko dla Zwierząt w Słupsku handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Leonek on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Leonek if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Schronisko dla Zwierząt w Słupsku will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Leonek already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Leonek isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Schronisko dla Zwierząt w Słupsku early rather than rehoming privately; they know Leonek and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (PL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
