Lobo

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 4 years

Lobo – meaning Wolf, and one need not look at the stunning ancient German herding dog pictures twice to understand where the fascinating, around four-year-old (as of June 2023) male dog got his name. Lobo was found severely injured on the street in 2020. Animal welfare workers ensured he received veterinary treatment. After countless operations and months of pain, Lobo’s veterinarians decided to amputate his shattered hind leg, and it quickly became clear that this was the only right decision for the originally so active and lively charmer. Since February 2022, Lobo has lived in the animal shelter of our new friends at Puri Refugio. The pitch-black heartthrob loves the animal welfare workers, he gets along well with the other dogs, he is cuddly and playful – but he can no longer endure life in the kennel. Lobo shows typical kennel aggression, spinning around in circles for hours and barking incessantly. Our partners now keep his kennel open, and Lobo can go into the run, where, as the video surveillance shows, he also spends his nights. But Lobo is unhappy in the animal shelter. The most beautiful moments for our black gentleman are the shared walks. Lobo is so obedient that he can always be let out in a large group of dogs, he reliably returns and always seeks contact with his people. The return to the refugio is always a catastrophe for Lobo, he knows that again loneliness awaits, the solitude without his beloved bipeds and the boredom that burdens his bright mind. We urgently seek people who can see beyond Lobo's disability and adopt the fantastic dog waiting for help in El Ejido. If you cannot give Lobo a forever home, we would also be more than happy if he could find a foster family. Despite his handicap, Lobo wants to work. He is a highly intelligent dog who shows wonderful learning achievements with an experienced handler. Lobo likes to be outdoors and prefers to decide where he wants to be. A house with a garden, mostly flat, with many nice neighbors would be a dream for our model athlete. Lobo must get out of the animal shelter urgently. He is friendly with everyone and everything, he is a majestic companion and a phenomenal hiking partner for every herding dog lover. He does not need special dog experience, he is obedient, eager to learn, attentive – and if Lobo had four legs, he would already have been adopted. Where are the special people who understand that Lobo only lost a leg and not his right to a fantastic life as a beloved family dog?

DE·Show original

Trotz seines Handicaps will Lobo arbeiten.

About Lobo

What life with Lobo looks like

Lobo is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Lobo, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Lobo?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Lobo on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Lobo if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Lobo already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Lobo isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Lobo and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
