Loekie

Male · Young · 3 years

Meet Loekie, a 3-year-old Tatra Hound. His owner was unable to care for him due to personal reasons. He stayed at a boarding kennel where he had no contact with people and hardly went outside due to his behavior. His coat was dirty and matted, and he was malnourished. The first days that Loekie stayed with us, we left him alone. He seemed quite relaxed, took treats, and sought contact with us. A whole new world opened up for him. Soon enough, he challenged us to play and we were increasingly accepted. We are now at the point where we can go out with him. The character of a Tatra Hound is increasingly emerging. He is reserved with strangers, watches well, and is the sweetest outside. Once he has accepted you, he loves cuddles and attention. Introductions with women go better than with men. He also shows aggression on a leash. You need to be very confident to be able to keep him. We are looking for 1 to 2 adult individuals with experience with the breed or a similar breed for Loekie. Loekie would do great as a watchdog where he also gets interaction with his owner. Please note that once Loekie feels at home, he can react protectively to visitors. Loekie will not be placed in a residential area, apartment, or with young children. He also cannot get along with dogs and cats. Multiple introductions are needed for Loekie. Interested in Loekie? Contact us via and mention in your motivation at least: Help animals like Loekie with medical care and a warm place. Give Bella some time and she will give you her whole heart.

Interesse in Loekie?

About Loekie

What life with Loekie looks like

Loekie is a large young adult dog waiting at Dierentehuis in Netherlands.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇳🇱Adopting from Netherlands

Dutch shelters typically require a household assessment and an adoption contract. Animals are routinely sterilized, microchipped, and registered in the national pet database (NDG) before placement.

Frequently asked

Adopting Loekie, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Loekie?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dierentehuis handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Loekie on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Loekie if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dierentehuis will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Loekie already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Loekie isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dierentehuis early rather than rehoming privately; they know Loekie and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
