Lona

Mixed Breed · Female · Senior · 10 years

Lona was found by our animal rescuers completely exhausted on the roadside. She was in severe pain and had a huge swollen belly. She was immediately taken to a veterinary clinic. The suspicion of a tumor was not confirmed. However, the diagnosis was another - and equally devastating: Lona carried around 6.5 kilograms of dead fetuses in her belly. An immediate emergency surgery was her only chance and saved her life. But her suffering was not over yet. In addition, a heartworm infestation was detected in Lona. This treatment is now complete. Despite everything, Lona shows herself to be a brave fighter and is now in the care of our animal rescuers, where she is slowly recovering from the ordeal. Lona is estimated to be around 10 years old. Currently, she finds it difficult to get up and walk. Fortunately, her blood test is unremarkable, so we hope that her symptoms are age-related - possibly caused by arthritis. She is currently receiving anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving medication to make her everyday life easier. Lona can now make her way to her new home. She is a balanced dog and very well-suited with other dogs. We wish Lona a family where she can arrive in peace, where she can receive love and security and beautiful walks in nature, and where she can help her leave the bad and deprived past behind her. A home with a garden in a rural area would be the perfect place for Lona to start her new life. Lona is spayed, vaccinated, microchipped and will be placed with a protection contract after a positive pre-control. General note on our protégés: Our dogs in Romania are regularly visited so that we can always reassess their behavior and development. These personal impressions help us very much to convey a possible good picture of each individual dog. Nevertheless, we would like to point out that a dog in a new environment - with new people, new routines and new impressions - can also show itself differently. This is quite normal and is part of every change process. Many dogs even open up faster at home and show sides that were not visible in the shelter. Our assessments are therefore based on current observations, but are not a guarantee for every behavior in the new environment. They should give an orientation and show how the dog presents itself in the shelter - and what potential is in him. We are convinced: With patience, understanding and a loving environment, every dog can find its way and develop positively.

About Lona

What life with Lona looks like

Lona is a senior mixed breed dog waiting at Vierbeiner in Not e.V. in Germany.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Dogs and cats typically leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with an EU pet passport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Lona, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Lona?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Vierbeiner in Not e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Lona on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Lona if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Vierbeiner in Not e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Lona already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Lona isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Vierbeiner in Not e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Lona and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
