Louis

Mixed Breed · Male · Puppy · 10 months

Louis was discovered alongside his mother Thelma by a busy road in Vicar at the beginning of 2023. For three whole days, Thelma managed to evade the animal welfare workers' attempts to take her in, even with her then still very clumsy puppy at her side. When they finally succeeded in securing the two dogs, Thelma and Louis were allowed to spend their quarantine period in a foster family, where they received their first vaccinations. It quickly became clear that the bond between Thelma and her son is extraordinary. To this day (as of August 2023, Louis is now 10 months old), the brave mother Thelma literally fights to the death to protect her son. Thelma is compatible with all dogs, but she will not let anyone near her son, which is why stays in a pack are only possible when the animal welfare workers from Puri Refugio separate Thelma and Louis. It is only natural to wonder why Thelma is so fixated on her son, but since Louis was alone with his mother, one can only speculate about what happened to the rest of the litter and whether Thelma experienced significant losses. From the small, shy bundle of fur that sat by Thelma by the roadside in winter, Louis has grown into a handsome, curly-haired puppy. In the first weeks at the animal shelter, Louis was very reserved around people, and it was clear that he knew the ways of the street and that his caring mother had rehomed him, that bipeds always pose a threat. In our partner's family refuge, Louis learned that one can trust some people and that his mother appreciates the cuddles from the animal welfare workers. Louis has grown into a calm, forward-thinking male dog who also likes to ask for affection and extra treats. He also enjoys the weekly group walks and looks forward to when a helper with a leash comes to the pen. Louis is looking for a family that can give him the time to understand the new world. Our curly-headed boy may not look like much, but he has herding dog genes and needs not only patience and understanding but also clear leadership. Herding dogs are not trained but are team players who must understand instructions and seek a counterpart in their human. To become a confident and anxiety-free strong male dog, Louis still needs some time to explore his environment and conduct targeted field trials. We would be very happy if he found a home that can provide him with the right environment for this. Louis does not want to move to the city; he likes fields, forests, and would also like a garden to watch over and for extended sunbathing. Since Louis has not yet had much experience with traffic, loud noises, strangers, city bands, neighbor cats, and the like, we would wish for his new best friends to have plenty of time to gradually introduce him to all the things he did not encounter during his puppyhood. Even though all of this sounds very demanding, we assure you that Louis is an absolutely lovable cuddle bear that is worth the effort. And can you imagine the envious glances of the neighbors when you walk by with such a unique companion on the leash? …. This is a young, adolescent dog.

About Louis

What life with Louis looks like

Louis is a small puppy/kitten mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Louis, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Louis?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Louis on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Louis if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Louis already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Louis isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Louis and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
