Luca

Male Β· Senior Β· 9 years

Gentle giant Luca is a true gentleman - he's around 66kg of dog (think Shetland pony) and turned 8 years old in April '26. He is a Bucovina which is a Romanian Shepherding breed - Romanian Bucovina Shepherd Dogs are courageous working dogs with a soft spot for children. They have a calm, protective nature and are incredibly loyal to their human pack. He has never been called upon to work, only to be a companion. Luca is neutered and chipped and has recently restarted his vaccinations. He has found himself in need of a new home due to his owner moving to accommodation where he isn't able to join her. He has been a pub dog all his life and is calm and gentle around all people and other animals. He is used to whiling away the hours in the bar being fed titbits and generally giving doggie cuddles to anyone who needs them, including small children. He does have some stiffness in his joints and is currently on 2 types of pain relief. He will not walk on tiles or shiny floors - we know that he fell in the kitchen of his last home and hurt himself so we think this is the reason for his reluctance so he will need a home with carpetted floors (or enough rugs to give him routes around the house and in/ out of the doors etc. Luca doesn't need long walks - he would rather potter around a garden and keep you company. He loves lying outside so needs a nice grassy spot for this as he has some long term pressure areas on his legs which are becoming more pronounced in the kennels due to the hard floors (we do provide a couple of large padded beds but he doesn't always choose to lie on them). He would be ideal for someone who can take a dog to work, or who has a business at home, or for someone who just wants to give a little extra love to a boy who needs it. As a giant dog he is a senior boy and really needs to be loved and cherished in his twilight years.

About Luca

What life with Luca looks like

Luca is an extra-large senior dog waiting at Windyway Animal Rescue in Macclesfield.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Luca, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Luca?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Windyway Animal Rescue handles screening and the adoption contract directly β€” TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Luca on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Luca if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad β€” Windyway Animal Rescue will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Luca already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported β€” ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Luca isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work β€” that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Windyway Animal Rescue early rather than rehoming privately; they know Luca and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect β€” names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
