Adopt LUIGI

Mixed Breed · Unknown · Adult · 7 years

Four-leggeds seek understanding and mental stimulation. LUIGI grew up very stimulus-restricted in the courtyard of a farm. He spent a lot of time alone but had the good fortune to be regularly taken for walks by a lady. About a year ago, he was rehomed to a couple, but unfortunately, they did not get along with him and focused more on functioning than understanding. Therefore, LUIGI now needs people who can handle him calmly, kindly, and understandingly. And also be prepared for a longer period of adjustment and visits with us. LUIGI now has some catch-up to do. So, we are working with him on walking past unfamiliar people at a greater distance in a calm manner and also reacting calmly to passing cars. The latter works well, but he still reacts to passersby, cyclists, and motorcyclists at times and would also snap if the distance is too close. LUIGI is a faithful companion for sporty, nature-connected people who can also keep his mind engaged, such as with nose work. He is not a city dog but needs a rural environment like the one he was accustomed to. He is not a dog that can be taken to restaurants or similar places. However, he can stay alone without breaking anything. LUIGI generally gets along well with female fellow animals. To get to know LUIGI, time is primarily needed to build mutual trust.

About LUIGI

What life with LUIGI looks like

LUIGI is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Krems in Krems an der Donau.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇦🇹Adopting from Austria

Austrian shelters follow the federal Tierschutzgesetz framework: adopters sign a Schutzvertrag (protection contract) committing to the animal's welfare. Spay/neuter, microchip, and vaccinations are included; fees typically range €150–€350.

Frequently asked

Adopting LUIGI, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about LUIGI?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Krems handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw LUIGI on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt LUIGI if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Krems will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is LUIGI already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if LUIGI isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Krems early rather than rehoming privately; they know LUIGI and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
