Luke

Mixed Breed · Unknown · Senior · 11 years

Luke, Labrador, born 2015, neutered: Luke is a really nice dog. Perhaps not the typical good-mood Labrador with a "will-to-please," but a fine, sometimes a bit rambunctious buddy type. Luke is solid, knows what he wants, and is a present dog. Nevertheless, walks with him are totally relaxed. He hardly gets bothered by anything. Cyclists, people, horses, cars... leave him completely indifferent and are usually even completely ignored. If Luke is not allowed to make decisions, then he is reliable, cooperative, and even a bit silly. He has no problem with strangers or proximity at the animal shelter, always provided that his counterpart is clear in their behavior. He does not like all male dogs but is basically compatible with other dogs and is actually very social and fair. Luke only acts silly when it comes to his food bowl or resources he claims. Many of his traits have, no doubt unintentionally, been exaggerated. Out of a dog who takes his business seriously and who, if you were to try to take his food, would bite seriously. He threatens for a long time, but if you take food that he considers his, his patience snaps very quickly. If it is not his, he wants it but can also wait and hold his ground. We work consistently with him, and his fuse is getting longer. Nevertheless, Luke will never be a dog who is at ease with his food. The behavior can only be managed by interested parties who can give him clear rules from the start and also later on. We know such people exist. Besides the food issue, he is such a relaxed dog. Luke cannot be rehomed with children. He needs dog-savvy, calm, and clear-minded people who can guide him through life. We know Luke is worth all the effort. He is a great dog who did not make himself. He deserves a real chance. DE·Show original

About Luke

What life with Luke looks like

Luke is a senior mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Pirmasens in Pirmasens.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Luke, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Luke?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Pirmasens handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Luke on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Luke if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Pirmasens will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Luke already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Luke isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Pirmasens early rather than rehoming privately; they know Luke and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
