Adopt Luna

Female · Young · 3 years

mixed-breed female dog Luna (*5/2018), who according to her vaccination card originally came from Greece, was brought to us in July 2021 by her previous owners because they could no longer do her justice due to a lack of time. At first, she had great difficulty adapting to shelter life and was rather mistrustful and reserved towards strangers. In the meantime, Luna has already developed more trust in her trusted people and allows herself to be easily leashed for daily walks. Outdoors, she shows a great interest in environmental stimuli. When other dogs "flirt" with her, Luna also gives them a good scolding, and then her people should be able to handle the rather strong female dog. According to information from her previous owners, Luna can stay alone for hours and travels well by car. For Luna, we are looking for a home as close to ground level as possible with a garden in a more rural environment with absolutely dog-experienced people who can handle her with sovereignty and responsibility. She had already been rehomed for a few weeks but came back to us because, after arriving in her new home, she developed a very strong protective instinct that overwhelmed the owners. Since she needs more time to get used to new people, potential adopters for Luna should be willing to visit the animal shelter more often to get to know her better.

About Luna

What life with Luna looks like

Luna is a large young adult dog waiting at Tierheim Düsseldorf in Düsseldorf.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

Note from the shelter: Needs time to build trust with new people, has strong protective instincts, requires experienced handlers

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Luna, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Luna?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Düsseldorf handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Luna on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Luna if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Düsseldorf will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Luna already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Luna isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Düsseldorf early rather than rehoming privately; they know Luna and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
