Mabel (& Mavis)

Mixed Breed · Female · Kitten · 4 months

Hello, we’re Mavis and Mabel, two little sisters looking for a special home where we can finally feel safe enough to be ourselves. Our story hasn’t had the happiest beginning. We were abandoned in a park, and after everything we’ve been through, the world feels like a very big and frightening place. We’re still extremely nervous around people, and we haven’t quite worked out yet that there are kind humans out there who only want to help us. But we’re trying, in our own little ways.We might not be the kittens who come rushing over to say hello or ask for cuddles straight away. For now, we prefer to watch from somewhere safe and take everything in from a distance. Every so often, though, you’ll catch a little glimpse of us. We’ll come out for our food, because even shy girls love treats. And sometimes, when we’re feeling brave enough, we’ll settle down for a snooze on our favourite chair. Those might seem like tiny things, but for us, they’re big steps towards feeling more comfortable with the world around us. We just need someone who understands that confidence doesn’t happen overnight, and that learning to trust can take time when life has only ever taught you to be afraid. We’re looking for a very special kind of home. Somewhere quiet and peaceful, with patient people who won’t expect too much from us too soon. We need humans who are happy to sit nearby without asking anything of us, let us observe from our safe little hiding places, and allow us to decide when we’re ready to take the next step.We can’t promise that we’ll be confident little lap cats straight away. But with patience, kindness, and the security of a loving home, we have the chance to discover a life we’ve never really known. Somewhere beneath all this fear are two little kittens who deserve to grow up feeling safe, warm, and wanted. We deserve a cosy place to sleep, regular meals, peaceful days, and the chance to learn that humans can be friends. We may be hiding for now, but we’re here, and we’re waiting for someone who can see past our fear and believe in the little cats we might one day become.Could you be our safe place? About Mabel (& Mavis)

What life with Mabel (& Mavis) looks like

Mabel (& Mavis) is a very small kitten mixed breed cat waiting at National Animal Welfare Trust in Watford.

Kittens are tiny chaos engines for about six months and then mellow rapidly. They need two scheduled feedings, a litter box per cat plus one extra, and somewhere high to climb. Spay/neuter happens around six months — most shelters arrange this before adoption.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Mabel (& Mavis), answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Mabel (& Mavis)?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. National Animal Welfare Trust handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Mabel (& Mavis) on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Mabel (& Mavis) if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — National Animal Welfare Trust will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Mabel (& Mavis) already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Mabel (& Mavis) isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with National Animal Welfare Trust early rather than rehoming privately; they know Mabel (& Mavis) and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
