Adopt Maira

Staffordshire Bull Terrier · Female · Senior · 12 years

Our Maira came to us in May 2018 through the veterinary office. Her background is unfortunately not entirely clear to us. Insufficient information led us to classify her as a problem dog because we only knew that one or more biting incidents had occurred through Maira. So Maira arrived with many "pre-awards" that presented us with a great challenge. We have been working with our Maira since May 2018, and we cannot share the assessment of many! In our opinion, much was overlooked and done incorrectly with Maira. The patterns and behaviors that Maira initially displayed have been well managed through intensive training. The mouse learns quickly and is enthusiastic about training. At the beginning, Maira was extremely suspicious of strangers and would bark at them, and she found other dogs tolerable with only a few exceptions. Through training, Maira can now tolerate visitors with her trainers and walk calmly past other people and dogs. Too many external stimuli and extreme situations can still trigger her old behavior, but she can handle them much better and can be calmed down more quickly. She is opening up more to other dogs and even plays, but she remains muzzled because she can snap under stress. She defends resources against fellow animals. She should be an individual dog in her new home, and possibly living with a very confident male dog could be possible. Maira needs experienced people who are willing to continue working consistently with her.

About Maira

What life with Maira looks like

Maira is a large senior staffordshire bull terrier dog waiting at Tierheim Jübberde in Uplengen.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Maira, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Maira?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Jübberde handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Maira on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Maira if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Jübberde will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Maira already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Maira isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Jübberde early rather than rehoming privately; they know Maira and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
