Maja

Mixed Breed · Female · Senior · 10 years

Maja has been with us for several years. She is a female dog with a big heart but full of uncertainty when it comes to new people. She arrived with us as a wild puppy, completely unaccustomed to humans. Thanks to the patience and work of our caretakers and volunteers, huge progress has been made – Maja no longer runs away at the sight of a person, and while she still doesn’t fully trust those she doesn’t know well, she is able to enjoy walks and a calm touch with those she does. Her joy is quiet, as if she’s afraid of giving too much away – but there’s something touching about it, making every moment with her invaluable. Maja needs most of all patience and peace. She is a dog who won’t find her place in the city’s hustle and bustle or in a home with children or other animals. The ideal place for Mai is a home in the countryside, surrounded by nature, where she can feel safe. Maja knows how to walk on a leash and is calm when left alone, making her a small ideal for someone who can give her time to gradually trust. We are looking for adult caretakers with experience with shy or fearful dogs. This adoption is demanding, but we know that somewhere there is someone who will see in Mai what she herself has yet to realize – that she deserves love and a peaceful life. Will you give this delicate soul a chance?

PL·Show original

Maja potrzebuje przede wszystkim cierpliwości i spokoju.

About Maja

What life with Maja looks like

Maja is a senior mixed breed dog waiting at Schronisko Skałowo in Poland.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇵🇱Adopting from Poland

Polish shelters maintain established transport routes to Germany, Netherlands, Austria, and Sweden. Animals leave sterilized and chipped. Adoption fees are typically lower than in Western Europe (often €50–€150) but adopters cover transport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Maja, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Maja?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Schronisko Skałowo handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Maja on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Maja if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Schronisko Skałowo will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Maja already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Maja isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Schronisko Skałowo early rather than rehoming privately; they know Maja and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (PL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
