Manuela

Podenco · Female · Adult · 3 years

Podenca Manuela is a stately lady who probably hasn't had much opportunity to experience much in her life yet. She doesn't seem to have had many wonderful experiences with people either and prefers to keep a certain safe distance. Nevertheless, she lets herself be touched without any problems, and things like putting on and taking off clothes are no issue at all. She's increasingly realizing that human touch and closeness can indeed be lovely—and as you allow her to take things at her own pace, she's becoming more and more confident. She quickly understood that life indoors, with a soft basket and plenty of peace and quiet, can be really enjoyable. Of course, there are still some things she needs to get better acquainted with here, but with patience and calmness, she learns quickly, because curiosity usually prevails. Very much in "podenco style," she loves being very active outdoors but tends to be more relaxed indoors. From day one, Manuela has already been house-trained. But her great passion is going for walks—walks she’s really looking forward to. She already walks quite well on the leash. She’d certainly be thrilled about long walks or hikes. Still, it’s important to be aware that her breed-specific hunting instinct is always present during every walk. Many new impressions are also unfamiliar to her and need to be processed first, so we’d prefer a quiet, rural environment for her where she can gradually get used to her surroundings in peace. However, she also absolutely loves just lying in the sun in the garden, watching the world go by. Therefore, a securely fenced garden would be ideal. She thinks other dogs are absolutely great. She enjoys playing a game now and then, but above all, it gives her a lot of security. So having an existing first dog would be wonderful—but it’s not a must. Taking responsibility for an animal shelter dog is always a special challenge. These dogs come with a backpack of past experiences or unlearned situations and need time to adjust to their new life. About Manuela

What life with Manuela looks like

Manuela is a large adult podenco dog waiting at SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. in Germany.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Manuela, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Manuela?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Manuela on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Manuela if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Manuela already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Manuela isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Manuela and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
