Mara

Mixed Breed · Unknown · Adult · 8 years

Mara finally wants to find a home! Mara is approximately 8 years old, originally from Romania, and is likely a herding dog mix. Size: approximately 60 cm, Weight: around 30 kg, microchipped/neutered/vaccinated, currently on a foster home in Munich. Mara came to Germany around 2020 and lived here for a long time on two foster placements before finally being rehomed about 2 years ago. Unfortunately, Mara can no longer stay with the current owner due to health reasons and is now temporarily back on a foster home. Mara shows typical herding dog characteristics and has a watchful personality. Mara can be left alone, and at home, she is peaceful, clingy, and cuddly, but with strangers (males), she becomes protective and guards her territory. With men, she usually needs more time to build trust, as she likely did not have good experiences in Romania, but especially with older men, and sticks or walking sticks, she has a problem. In dog encounters, she often decides based on mutual liking, but she also shows clear improvements in training and after a short adjustment period, she gets along with everyone. She currently lives with four other dogs, and although there were some initial disagreements, she has settled in very well in just a few weeks and there are no problems. She likes older children very much. She chases cats. She also has a prey drive, although the recall could still be improved. Mara had bilateral hip joint surgeries in her youth in Romania, which she currently barely notices. Nevertheless, one should pay close attention to her weight and ideally have an ground-floor home for the future. But currently, she can still go for walks and use stairs without major issues. Unfortunately, there was a recent incident at her last home where by accident the garden gate was left open, so that Mara bit an older man. Unfortunately, some unfortunate coincidences have come together, and it is certain that there will be conditions on you. Who is suitable for Mara: people with dog experience—preferably with herding dog knowledge—who are willing to take responsibility, train, and not back down from challenges. No beginner or follower dog. But: A true companion for people with heart, husbandry, and patience. You can meet Mara in Munich.

About Mara

What life with Mara looks like

Mara is a adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Starnberg in Starnberg.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Mara, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Mara?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Starnberg handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Mara on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Mara if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Starnberg will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Mara already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Mara isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Starnberg early rather than rehoming privately; they know Mara and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
