Adopt Mara

Mixed Breed · Unknown · Puppy · 3 months

Mara, the Uncertain Mara, is a beautiful, black female dog. She has been in the shelter for many years. The hustle and bustle are often too much for her. As I described with Max, Glenn, Ruza and Ayla, a small group of dogs lives in the front corner of the shelter. I have called them the "corner dogs" so far. Milan has now separated them spatially so that those living there can have more peace. Their box now opens to the other side of the shelter, where there are fewer dogs, and they are not constantly barked at. Mara is an uncertain female dog. But she likes people, and if she gets the chance amid the crowd of other dogs, she will also be happy to be petted. Mara also has no problems with other dogs and avoids conflicts. She is a quiet, unobtrusive female dog who would be happy to have a home of her own. Info: What does it mean that the dog is not yet ready for adoption? Our dogs are vaccinated according to regulations. Rabies vaccination is done annually in Serbia. To bring dogs from Serbia, which is now a listed third country, into the EU, they need a corresponding rabies titer. This measures whether there are enough antibodies against rabies in the blood. For Serbia, the titer certificate must be at least 3 months old upon entry into the EU. Since titers are quite expensive, not all dogs have the certificate, but it is only done when needed. If a dog is adopted, it can therefore take up to 3 months until it is ready for adoption. Blood is taken from the dog and sent to the lab. This is also the reason why our dogs can be placed or become ready for adoption at the earliest at 8 months. You cannot adopt Mara, but you still want to support her? No problem. About Mara

What life with Mara looks like

Mara is a large puppy/kitten mixed breed dog waiting at Help For Strays e.V. - Animal Hope Riska Belgrad in Aachen.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Mara, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Mara?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Help For Strays e.V. - Animal Hope Riska Belgrad handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Mara on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Mara if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Help For Strays e.V. - Animal Hope Riska Belgrad will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Mara already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Mara isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Help For Strays e.V. - Animal Hope Riska Belgrad early rather than rehoming privately; they know Mara and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
