💗 MARA 💗 JADR 📍 Location: Croatia, near Zagreb — can be visited on-site at any time 🐾 General Information: • Name: Mara • Age: born on May 6, 2022 (approx. 4 years old) • Gender: female • Breed: mixed breed 🐾 Health: • Overall condition: healthy and agile • Fully vaccinated according to the standard protocol (also microchipped & equipped with an EU pet passport) • Spayed • Weight: approx. 28 kg • Height: approx. 55 cm The descriptions of the dogs provided by the foster homes are based on current impressions from their time on site and do not guarantee the dog’s future behavior or development. 🐾 Character & Behavior: Despite her impressive size, Mara is an exceptionally gentle, humble, and infinitely grateful soul. As a sensitive dog, she needs some time in a new environment to feel secure, since everything new initially still makes her a bit anxious. However, as soon as she senses that people mean well by her, she gradually begins to open up her big heart. She loves calm words, gentle touches, and longs for affectionate attention. With a clear daily routine, her self-confidence grows steadily in everyday life. Mara gets along wonderfully with other dogs—having the company of fellow canines gives her enormous security and orientation in daily life. She also behaves exemplarily toward cats and accepts them without any problems. Walking on a leash is currently still somewhat stressful for Mara due to her insecurity, but with empathetic guidance, she’ll certainly master this challenge soon. Mara might not immediately run into your arms on day one, but once trust has been established, she’ll give her humans unconditional loyalty and deep love. 🐾 Her Story: Mara’s story is marked by long waiting periods. In June 2023, this black beauty arrived at a large animal shelter. Days, weeks, and months passed; countless visitors walked past her kennel—but Mara was simply overlooked, perhaps just because of her black coat color. No one took the time to get to know her gentle soul. Eventually, our animal welfare helper could no longer resist her sad yet warm gaze, recognized her true potential, and brought her out of the shelter. Now, Mara is waiting at her foster home for people who will finally see her for who she really is. 🐾 Dream Home: • A quiet home free of hustle and bustle, where Mara can settle in at her own pace. Ideally, someone with experience working with anxious and insecure dogs. • People who are patient, empathetic, and have a structured daily routine that doesn’t overwhelm her. • An experienced, friendly first dog in the new home would be absolutely ideal to help her get off to a smooth start. 💌 How You Can Help: ❣️ Adopt Mara ❣️ Offer Foster Care ❣️ Become a Sponsor ❣️ Share—so Mara can find her family 🐾❤️

About Mara

What life with Mara looks like

Mara is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Hund sucht Hütte in Austria.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇦🇹Adopting from Austria

Austrian shelters follow the federal Tierschutzgesetz framework: adopters sign a Schutzvertrag (protection contract) committing to the animal's welfare. Spay/neuter, microchip, and vaccinations are included; fees typically range €150–€350.

Frequently asked

Adopting Mara, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Mara?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Hund sucht Hütte handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Mara on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Mara if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Hund sucht Hütte will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Mara already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Mara isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Hund sucht Hütte early rather than rehoming privately; they know Mara and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
