Mara

Mixed Breed · Female

Mara was found abandoned at a campsite and thus came to us at the animal shelter. The athletic female dog was born around 2022. Mara is a true bundle of energy, with a strong need for movement and to be occupied. In work with people, Mara shows high motivation, extremely willing to learn and cooperative. When you explain to Mara what you want from her, she walks well on the leash, is oriented and responsive. She quickly understood exercises such as taking treats only on release and eye contact, and she also masters impulse control exercises very well and showed rapid progress in the conditioning of a recall word. Mara's big problem: handling frustration. Anyone who visits us at the animal shelter has certainly heard Mara's charming voice. Mara doesn't want to be alone when things don't happen fast enough or don't go as she expects, then she becomes an opera singer and performs her best piece. We are sure that this behavior can be worked on well, as she already shows progress with us. In the hectic daily life of the animal shelter, Mara sometimes finds it difficult to calm down, which partly causes the frustration issue. In the home environment, the young dog is calm, sleeps in her bed, is clean and doesn't break anything. In general, Mara is a sensitive dog, who sometimes tends towards theatrics. It is important to convey calmness to her during exciting moments of everyday life and to help with self-regulation if necessary. With patience, time and, if necessary, under the guidance of a competent professional, we believe it will be possible for Mara to be left alone for a few hours. Mara is always friendly towards people. It can happen that she shows some uncertainty with strangers and barks, but when accompanied in the situation, her uncertainty turns into interest and she enjoys petting. Mara is generally socially compatible. At the beginning, she showed a tendency to bully smaller dogs. This behavior is no longer present with us, since we have explained to her that this type of treatment is not desired. We are looking for people who have the desire to take on a task with Mara. The time and motivation to grow with Mara and a good portion of patience. Whoever persists and is not discouraged by possible setbacks will be rewarded with a wonderful companion who can be a real enrichment. Whether Mara is compatible with children has not yet been tested, but we can imagine that older children would not be a problem. If necessary, this should be tested. Mara is microchipped, vaccinated and neutered. | Impressum | Datenschutz

About Mara

What life with Mara looks like

Mara is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Brandenburg an der Havel in Brandenburg.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Mara, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Mara?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Brandenburg an der Havel handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Mara on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Mara if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Brandenburg an der Havel will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Mara already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Mara isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Brandenburg an der Havel early rather than rehoming privately; they know Mara and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
