Mara

Mixed Breed · Female · Adult · 4 years

Mara (born 06/2022) is a bright, curious female dog who loves an active life and wants to experience things together with her people. She enjoys walks, loves romping with other dogs, and takes pleasure in discovering new things and learning. Unfortunately, the circumstances in her previous home have changed, so Mara is looking for a new home. She has done nothing wrong and deserves people who will give her a secure place in their lives once again. Mara gets along well with other dogs and enjoys playing together with them. She is also friendly toward strangers, but some people need a little time to earn her trust. In unfamiliar situations she prefers to observe calmly at first before getting involved. Once she has built trust, she shows herself to be very affectionate and forms a close bond with her primary caregiver. Mara is a communicative dog who likes to express her feelings and wishes through various sounds and also through barking. She pays close attention to her surroundings and sometimes wants to take charge herself. For this reason, she needs people who will give her guidance with calm, clear rules and loving consistency, and who will show her that she does not have to handle everything on her own. Being left alone is still difficult for Mara at the moment. She does not destroy anything, but she whines from time to time and does not yet feel truly comfortable without her people. This should be trained patiently and in small steps in her new home. Outdoors, she also shows hunting interest, especially toward hares, squirrels, and deer. Her people should be prepared for this and lead her with appropriate care. Mara is already familiar with children and various animals such as horses, chickens, pigs, and cows. She also gets along with cats, as long as they do not run away from her. Mara is an active, eager-to-learn companion who enjoys working together with her people and wants to be mentally and physically occupied. She already has many wonderful qualities, but there are also areas where she still needs support. We are therefore looking for people who enjoy learning together with her, who can give her a sense of security, and who will accompany her through life with patience and consistency. Mara will be vaccinated, microchipped, and neutered following a positive preliminary check, and she will be placed with a protection agreement through the animal welfare association Vierbeiner in Not e. V. A safety harness is required when collecting the dog. Such a harness (3-strap safety harness) can be purchased for only 25 € at the same time.

Mara (geb.

About Mara

What life with Mara looks like

Mara is an adult mixed breed dog waiting at Vierbeiner in Not e.V. in Germany.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Dogs and cats typically leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with an EU pet passport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Mara, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Mara?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Vierbeiner in Not e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Mara on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Mara if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Vierbeiner in Not e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Mara already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Mara isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Vierbeiner in Not e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Mara and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
