Marcel

Mixed Breed · Male · Senior · 9 years

Marcel arrived at our shelter in 2018 as a result of a large intervention, during which 50 dogs were rescued from a scrapyard. These dogs had been living in isolation from the human world, without proper socialization and safe experiences with humans. Marcel started with a very low level of trust and a high level of environmental fear. At first, he avoided contact, withdrew, and reacted with distance to attempts at interaction. His behaviors were defensive in nature – not stemming from aggression, but from the need to maintain safety. Over the years, through systematic, calm work, he learned to function in the realities of an animal shelter and gradually reduce his level of tension in the presence of caregivers. Currently, Marcel walks nicely on a leash in a peaceful environment. In familiar conditions, he can approach a human, accept a gentle touch, and increasingly shortens the distance. He still needs a moment to assess the situation and ensure that the contact is safe, but his readiness to interact has clearly increased. This is a dog working on emotion regulation and getting better at handling new stimuli when they are introduced gradually. He accepts other dogs. A stable, balanced companion can play the role of a behavior model and increase his sense of security. We observe that in the presence of a calm dog, Marcel relaxes more quickly and more eagerly explores his surroundings. The best environment for Marcel will be a peaceful home with a predictable routine, without small children, preferably with access to a garden. Key will be patience, consistency, and respecting his pace. He is recommended for experience working with fearful dogs or a willingness to collaborate with a behaviorist. Marcel is a dog who has made a huge progress. With appropriate support in a home environment, he has a real chance for further reduction in his fear level and deepening of his relationship with the caregiver. We are looking for a permanent or temporary home that will be ready to accompany him on this next stage of his journey.

W znanych warunkach potrafi podejść do człowieka, przyjmuje delikatny dotyk i coraz częściej sam skraca dystans.

About Marcel

What life with Marcel looks like

Marcel is a senior mixed breed dog waiting at Schronisko Skałowo in Poland.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇵🇱Adopting from Poland

Polish shelters maintain established transport routes to Germany, Netherlands, Austria, and Sweden. Animals leave sterilized and chipped. Adoption fees are typically lower than in Western Europe (often €50–€150) but adopters cover transport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Marcel, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Marcel?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Schronisko Skałowo handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Marcel on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Marcel if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Schronisko Skałowo will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Marcel already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Marcel isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Schronisko Skałowo early rather than rehoming privately; they know Marcel and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (PL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
