Adopt Mario

Mixed Breed · Male · Young · 1 year

Mario is a neutered mixed breed dog born in January 2025, who was found together with his sister Mollie and his mother Malaika on a neglected property near the animal shelter in Svilos and taken to the shelter as a puppy. He is now ready for adoption and is looking for a forever home. Mario is a young dog who is still very uncertain and needs time to learn that people do not want to harm him and that he can trust them. Before being rescued from the abandoned property, he had a big responsibility: He protected his mother and sister from people who had bad intentions. These experiences have shaped him and still make it difficult for him to allow closeness. Currently, Mario is hardly touchable and even runs away from people he already knows. Nevertheless, there are first small progress: Since his arrival at the shelter, he now cautiously takes treats from the hand. In the near future, Mario will live in the staff house. There he should gradually learn to get used to the presence of people and develop a feeling of security and safety. Fortunately, Mario gets along well with other dogs. On the yard he likes to play with them, and it can be observed that he strongly follows them: He walks with them and imitates their behavior. He does not yet feel completely free and untroubled, so he has not run and played much so far. Especially close is his bond with his enclosure partner, whom he is very attached to and with whom he likes to play especially. His behavior towards cats and other animals is unknown. Mario still needs some time and patient people who give him the opportunity to arrive at his own pace. A previously existing, confident dog in his future home would certainly be a great help for him, as he strongly relies on companions of his own kind. Small children should not be in his future home. With patience, understanding and loving support, Mario has a good chance to gain trust and develop into a loyal companion. The dog's shoulder height is about 48 cm and he weighs about 17 kg.

About Mario

What life with Mario looks like

Mario is a medium-sized young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Animal Care Hungary.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇭🇺Adopting from Hungary

Hungarian shelters operate at high capacity given the country's stray population. Animals leave sterilized, chipped, and with a passport. Many shelters coordinate transport to Germany, Austria, and the Nordics.

Frequently asked

Adopting Mario, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Mario?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Animal Care Hungary handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Mario on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Mario if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Animal Care Hungary will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Mario already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Mario isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Animal Care Hungary early rather than rehoming privately; they know Mario and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (HU). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
