Mary

Female · Adult · 4 years

Mary doesn't need pity. And she's not looking for people who apply because she's cute, or because they've always wanted a Retriever, or because they think they "can handle any dog." We're looking for people who already have experience with dogs like Mary. People who understand what fear, insecurity, and lack of socialization mean in everyday life. People who know that you can't unpack a heavy backpack in a few weeks. Because that's the backpack Mary carries around. Mary is an incredibly loving, gentle mouse. But many things that come naturally to other dogs, Mary never had to learn. So she often meets the world with uncertainty and caution. She needs people who can give her security, not people who have expectations of her. Adopting Mary means getting a dog who won't be everywhere and everything right from the start. It means getting a dog who needs to learn to trust. A dog who needs time. And a dog who needs people who will still be by her side even when things don't always move forward. For Mary, we're looking for a quiet home with a house and a securely fenced yard. A dog-only home would be a big help for her. Children should not live in the household. Not because Mary is mean – quite the opposite. But Mary needs people who are 100% attentive. If she gets into a panic, a single inattention could have serious consequences. Please do not apply for Mary out of pity. And not with the thought: "It will work out." Mary is looking for people who don't dismiss her past, respect her boundaries, and are willing to walk the path with her – no matter how long it takes. Behind all her insecurity lies a wonderful female dog.

Mary braucht kein Mitleid. Hinter all ihrer Unsicherheit steckt eine wundervolle Hündin.

About Mary

What life with Mary looks like

Mary is a large adult dog waiting at Tierheim Herne-Wanne in Herne.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Mary, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Mary?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Herne-Wanne handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Mary on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Mary if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Herne-Wanne will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Mary already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Mary isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Herne-Wanne early rather than rehoming privately; they know Mary and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
