Matheo

Staffordshire Bull Terrier · Male · Adult · 5 years

Matheo came to us as a supposed found dog. Barely 15 minutes before he allegedly jumped into a transport vehicle, a man arrived at the shelter to drop off a dog he was caring for on behalf of a friend. Now, Matheo is with us, and as expected, no one has claimed the dog man. Matheo simply cannot be blamed. He is under a lot of stress, sometimes screams extremely loudly when he sees dogs or gets excited, and it was very, very difficult to even get close to him. He seems to have had little interaction and is extremely overstimulated. Especially in response to movement stimuli, he reacts strongly. He is very much the type to "charge headfirst" and is a real bollerdog, finding it very hard to think before acting. In extreme stress situations, Matheo is not really approachable and it is very difficult to pull him out of his shell. We work intensively with Matheo six to seven days a week, and slowly a bond is forming. Currently, he is supported with medication to give him the chance to calm down and learn. These medications are working well, and there are more and more moments where he lets himself fall and clearly enjoys the human contact. The more he can give in to people, the more relaxed the interaction becomes, and Matheo can also be a real fun dog. Even at the vet, he is a model patient – this must be emphasized at this point. He has no problem with manipulations on him, even by strangers. We are looking for dog-experienced people who have no issues with a muzzle or attending dog training classes or intensive individual training. We stand by you and support the learning process intensively, also with our trainers. Matheo definitely deserves a chance. Other dogs or children should not be in the new home. As a Staffordshire Terrier-mixed breed, Matheo in NRW is a so-called "Anlagehund," for which some adoption requirements must be met (permit from the responsible authority, leash and muzzle requirement, etc.). We are happy to give you more information in a personal conversation.

About Matheo

What life with Matheo looks like

Matheo is a large adult staffordshire bull terrier dog waiting at Tierheim Bonn in Bonn.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Matheo, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Matheo?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Bonn handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Matheo on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Matheo if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Bonn will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Matheo already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Matheo isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Bonn early rather than rehoming privately; they know Matheo and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
