Max

Mixed Breed · Male · Puppy · 7 months

Max, a male HSH-Mix, has been at the shelter since March 2026. He is estimated to be born in February 2026, stands about 60-69 cm tall, and weighs around 20-24 kg. Learn more about Max in a video! Max wants to discover the world Max was just a few days old when he and his mother and siblings were taken to a Romanian killing station. We explain how the dogs got there and more in our animal welfare FAQ. The little family was rescued and Max grew up in our partner shelter. The tiny puppy has grown into a sturdy young dog who is already about 60 cm tall at seven months old. Max is an energetic, lively, and very people-oriented young dog. Even as a small puppy, he sought out our helpers more often than his siblings and loved to stay with them. This has not changed much: When someone stands in front of his kennel, Max wags his tail and sticks his paws through the bars. As soon as you go into his kennel, he runs over to you and lets himself be touched and stroked everywhere. Max is in the middle of puberty and shows it: He jumps up in joy and likes to nibble on hands or clothes. At the same time, he can calm down. During a visit, he lay down next to our helpers after a short time and let himself be stroked on the belly. He also lets himself be lifted and weighed without any problems. Currently, Max lives alone in his kennel due to his high energy level. He previously played and romped a lot with his siblings. Therefore, further observations are important for his further social behavior. We suspect that Max is a Herdenschutzhund (HSH) mix. Please inform yourself here about the requirements for adopting a Herdenschutzhund mix. HSH mixes are often very independent and need a confident leadership. We are looking for a dog-experienced home for Max that has dealt with the special requirements of a possible Herdenschutzhund mix. With a shoulder height of about 60 cm, he is also a large, strong young dog whose upbringing is far from over. Max needs people who can channel his energy in the right direction, convey boundaries and calmness to him, and at the same time enjoy learning with him. He spent his first months of life behind bars. Now it's time for the people-oriented young dog to experience how big the world outside his kennel actually is. We wish for him people who are aware that animal shelter dogs bring a certain history with them. We can never predict in the shelter how a dog will react to life in Germany. That's why we're looking for people who have patience, perseverance, and goodwill. But one thing is certain: Whoever adopts instead of buying not only gives a second chance to an animal, but also actively decides against animal suffering - and for a life with a very special companion by their side. In love yet? Send us a self-disclosure! Adoption If you are thinking about an adoption, first read through the placement process. All dogs are vaccinated, chipped, dewormed, flea-treated, and neutered (except for puppies up to 6 months and very old dogs) before they leave. Dogs older than 1 year are also tested for Mediterranean diseases. If you have any questions, please send a message to our placement team.

About Max

What life with Max looks like

Max is a large puppy/kitten mixed breed dog waiting at Hunderettung Europa e.V. in Duisburg.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Max, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Max?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Hunderettung Europa e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Max on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Max if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Hunderettung Europa e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Max already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Max isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Hunderettung Europa e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Max and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
