adoption requirements adoption process Adopt this animal now! adoption requirements adoption process Melissa can stay forever in your foster home! Her story: Melissa, affectionately named Melli by her foster family, lives up to her name, which means "sweet bee." With her athletic figure and attentive gaze, she is a picture of a female dog. Her light brown eyes look interested and alert into the camera, because Melissa hopes for a lot from her future. Her short, black-blond fur, triangular ears, and black face mask suggest that Melissa is a Belgian German Shepherd mix female dog. Since the end of September, Melissa has settled well in her foster family. The young female dog is very people-friendly, clingy, and has no fear of other animals; she meets everything with open-mindedness. Melissa has been house-trained since the beginning, can stay alone without a problem, and loves car rides. She patiently waits when she is alone. At certain times, she wants to be picked up and cuddled precisely on time. In a short time, Melissa has already learned a lot and, for example, only eats when commanded. She can now be led well on a leash. Melissa is only about one year old and is currently in the important phase of puberty. Right now, the young female dog needs a lot of affection and training. Therefore, she needs active and dog-experienced people by her side who can train her with patience and understanding, where her temperament is appropriately encouraged and challenged. The intelligent and athletic female dog with her alert and demanding mind is very active and energetic and needs a lot of mental stimulation and movement. She is likely to show typical racy traits in her new home and will require a lot of movement, mental stimulation, and an appropriate task. The active female dog is also suitable for any kind of dog sports. Melissa requires people who are willing to really engage with her; she is not just a dog who lives in the family. Melissa demands a lot from her people, but in return, you will be rewarded with special devotion and loyalty. We are looking for people who will give Melissa enough time to settle into her new living situation and are excited to work with the intelligent female dog and challenge her. We recommend working with a positively trained dog class, as regular training and many shared activities will mentally and physically challenge her and strengthen the bond to her new owners. Has Melissa captured your heart? Then contact us. She can be neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, and come with an EU pet passport at any time. A special thank you goes to her godmother Susi G., who gave Melissa her beautiful name and thus her own identity. As of: 01.11.

Stand: 01.11.2024

About Melissa

What life with Melissa looks like

Melissa is a large young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Ein Herz für Streuner e.V. in München.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Melissa, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Melissa?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Ein Herz für Streuner e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Melissa on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Melissa if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Ein Herz für Streuner e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Melissa already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Melissa isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Ein Herz für Streuner e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Melissa and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
