Merlin

Male · Puppy

About MerlinMerlin is a lovely lad who originally came to the centre via an inspector after his needs were not getting met, he was adopted out but unfortunately through no fault of his own it did not work out and Merlin finds himself looking for another new home. Sadly Merlin is pretty much blind and was born this way, he may be able to see slightly but it will be very blurry. As he gets older there is a high possibility that Merlin will go completely blind. He does not let this affect him so please do not let this put you off adopting him. Visually impaired dogs cope remarkably well when adapting to a new home, consistency and verbal markers are a necessity when adopting a dog who is visually impaired. They learn quick to familiarise themselves with their surroundings and family. It is often helpful if they have another dog with them as well. Merlin is a lovely, kind and gentle dog who loves to be with his people getting lots of attention. Unfortunately Merlin missed out on a lot of important socialisation when he was a young puppy so he has a little catching up to do. He is young, keen and ready to learn and experience new things. He will need adopters who are at home most of the time while he settles in to family life. Merlin gets on well with most other dogs but being a young exuberant adolescent lad he can become quite excitable and boisterous so if he was to live with another dog, they would need to meet his activity levels. They would need a successful introduction at the centre so we can make sure he will not be too much for them. He is suitable to live with children aged 13 years and over.

About Merlin

What life with Merlin looks like

Merlin is a puppy/kitten dog waiting at RSPCA York Animal Home in York.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Merlin, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Merlin?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. RSPCA York Animal Home handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Merlin on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Merlin if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — RSPCA York Animal Home will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Merlin already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Merlin isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with RSPCA York Animal Home early rather than rehoming privately; they know Merlin and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (the shelter's own language). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
