Mia

Akita · Unknown · Adult · 5 years

Today we’re sharing the lovely Mia, who is currently in the care of another rescue, to help find the breed-experienced home she so deserves. Mia is approximately 5 years old and is spayed. Mia has now spent over 525 days waiting for her forever family, and we’d love to see that wait finally come to an end. Mia came into rescue after concerns were raised for her welfare, and it quickly became clear that she’d missed out on many of life’s simple pleasures. She didn’t know how to play with toys, had very little experience around other dogs, and had lots to learn about life in a loving home. Since then, she has made incredible progress. With the support of her carers, Mia has learned to walk much more nicely on the lead and knows several commands including sit, paw, spin, and down. She’s an intelligent girl who loves food, making training both fun and rewarding. Enrichment feeders are one of her favourite ways to keep her busy. Nowadays, Mia loves nothing more than spending time in the garden, throwing her toys around, chasing the water from the hose, and enjoying the sunshine. After a good walk and some playtime, she’s perfectly happy curling up on her mountain of fluffy blankets for a cuddle. She also enjoys being brushed, helping to keep her beautiful coat looking its best, although she’d happily leave bath time off the schedule! Mia enjoys her walks and loves having the opportunity to run off lead in a secure, enclosed area. Like many Akitas, she can be a strong girl and gets excited when she spots wildlife, so she’ll need someone confident enough to manage her strength while continuing her training. One of Mia’s biggest achievements has been learning how to behave around other dogs. When she first arrived, she simply didn’t know how to interact with them. She can now happily walk alongside other dogs and even shows signs that she’d like to play. However, because she still has limited experience, she is looking for a home where she can be the only pet. Mia isn’t particularly destructive, although she will occasionally shred one of her blankets when left alone. Her carers believe this may be linked to boredom or some separation anxiety, so she’d be happiest with someone who is home for most of the day while she settles in. Mia’s ideal home would be: An adult only home. No other dogs or pets. Someone home for most of the day. Direct access to a secure, enclosed garden. An active, breed experienced owner who will continue her training, provide plenty of enrichment, and enjoy long walks together. Mia has worked so hard to become the wonderful dog she is today. Now all she needs is someone willing to give her the chance she’s waited so patiently for. We’d love to see her finally enjoying everything she’s missed out on, perhaps even her very first trip to the beach, before heading home to a family that’s hers forever. Could that be you? About Mia

What life with Mia looks like

Mia is a adult akita dog waiting at Akita Rescue & Welfare Trust UK in United Kingdom.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Mia, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Mia?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Akita Rescue & Welfare Trust UK handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Mia on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Mia if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Akita Rescue & Welfare Trust UK will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Mia already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Mia isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Akita Rescue & Welfare Trust UK early rather than rehoming privately; they know Mia and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
