Adopt Mika

European Shorthair · Female · Adult · 9 years

Mika is a nearly 15-year-old cat. She was dropped off by her previous owner because she really didn't like living with a small child. Give Mika a bit more peace and quiet. This lady likes to go about her own business and manage her own day. She asks regularly for a petting, but of course, only when she feels like it. Hanging out on the couch with the boss is definitely one of her hobbies, but she's also very good at lounging and enjoys going outside. Mika is a cat who needs to be able to go outside on her own with a cat door, to a garden where there is plenty of greenery, or free access to a cat-friendly neighborhood. When there is a visitor, everyone is greeted with enthusiasm, and Mika makes sure to get a cuddle. She is generally very curious and likes to be everywhere. If she gets bored, she might give a little tap, which isn't very handy if you have children. It might be that she has fewer problems with older children who are calmer and understand that Mika gets to make her own decisions. Mika has lived with another cat, but she prefers not to have to share her new home with a feline companion. Mika has early-stage kidney failure and requires a kidney diet.

About Mika

What life with Mika looks like

Mika is a small adult european shorthair cat waiting at Dierentehuis Stevenshage Leiden in Leiden.

An adult cat usually shows their personality within a week. Give them a quiet room with everything they need (food, water, litter, hiding spot) and let them choose when to explore. Don't force interaction — every cat decides for themselves when a new home counts as home.

🇳🇱Adopting from Netherlands

Dutch shelters typically require a household assessment and an adoption contract. Animals are routinely sterilized, microchipped, and registered in the national pet database (NDG) before placement.

Frequently asked

Adopting Mika, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Mika?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dierentehuis Stevenshage Leiden handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Mika on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Mika if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dierentehuis Stevenshage Leiden will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Mika already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Mika isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dierentehuis Stevenshage Leiden early rather than rehoming privately; they know Mika and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
