Mika

European Shorthair · Female · Adult · 9 years

Hi, I'm Mika and I'm 14 years young. I've been in the animal shelter for a while now and I don't really understand why no one would want to take me in. I love cuddles and often come to sit on your couch. It's cozy to spend our evenings together like that. Even when there's a visitor, I greet everyone cheerfully and make sure they can give me a pat. At the animal shelter, I often chill on the volunteers' laps. It's great that they think that's nice, you know. I feel fit and still chase a string around. I really want to play and, by the way, also enjoy a little fresh air outside. There are so many fun things to do. Relaxing under bushes, chasing a leaf, getting brown in the sunshine. I'm just a super cute cat and I'm definitely worth getting a nice new home. By the way, I don't like a lot of hustle and bustle, and I think children are a bit too much. I prefer a quiet household with an owner who understands that I love cuddles but also likes to have my own time for cuddles. Mika has early-stage kidney failure and is on a kidney diet.

About Mika

What life with Mika looks like

Mika is a adult european shorthair cat waiting at Dierentehuis Stevenshage Leiden in Leiden.

An adult cat usually shows their personality within a week. Give them a quiet room with everything they need (food, water, litter, hiding spot) and let them choose when to explore. Don't force interaction — every cat decides for themselves when a new home counts as home.

🇳🇱Adopting from Netherlands

Dutch shelters typically require a household assessment and an adoption contract. Animals are routinely sterilized, microchipped, and registered in the national pet database (NDG) before placement.

Frequently asked

Adopting Mika, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Mika?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dierentehuis Stevenshage Leiden handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Mika on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Mika if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dierentehuis Stevenshage Leiden will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Mika already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Mika isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dierentehuis Stevenshage Leiden early rather than rehoming privately; they know Mika and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
