Milo

Dachshund · Male · Senior · 9 years

- has a good general obedience - knows how to ride in the car - be cautious with strangers - tends to resource guarding - needs a home without children or cats Milo came to us as a court-ordered seizure from his previous owner, having severely bitten her. The stubborn dachshund head has learned to take what he wants and has gotten by with that approach — at least from his perspective. With people who don’t take no for an answer, Milo is a willing and perceptive fellow. Here at the animal shelter, he’s learned a lot that makes living with a human a bit easier. Still, Milo can sometimes show his teeth. A one-time discussion isn’t enough with him, and resource guarding can occur in everyday situations. Even during manipulations (e.g., vet visits, grooming, etc.), Milo can display some pretty negative behaviors. His new people should be aware of this and not be misled by his size or fluffiness. During the day, Milo can walk in a mixed group of dogs, but he’s mostly occupied with himself. Secured with a muzzle, he likes to lie in the sun, dig our trenches, or wait for his volunteer walker. Occasionally, he’ll accept a cuddle and let himself be luxuriously stroked. Those who have built a strong bond with Milo will be rewarded with a longer leash. However, even this doesn’t always hold.

About Milo

What life with Milo looks like

Milo is a medium-sized senior dachshund dog waiting at Tierheim Hamburg in Hamburg.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

Note from the shelter: Resource guarding issues, history of biting, requires consistent training and boundaries

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Milo, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Milo?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Hamburg handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Milo on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Milo if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Hamburg will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Milo already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Milo isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Hamburg early rather than rehoming privately; they know Milo and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
