Adopt Mio

European Shorthair · Male · Adult · 4 years

Hi, I'm Mio, a five-year-old tomcat. I was brought here because it was clear that I really didn't want to live with my stupid brother anymore. I heard that through the animal shelter, I can find a home without another cat, and that's exactly what I want! My previous owner called me very autonomous, but I have no idea what that means, and it doesn't matter anyway, I do what I want. And that's okay even if you're a cat. I'm curious and like to go on little explorations. I'm also often found outside just wandering around. I really enjoy that freedom. But I'm also happy to be near my owner. I come to his lap when I feel like it and stay there for a long time. I have no problem with binge-watching. Of course, I look very tough, but honestly, I'm quite shy. I'm happiest just with my owner. I don't have any problem with visitors; I've already left by the time the doorbell rings. Children are completely terrifying, of course. And although I love my owner, I won't be caught. I have four legs to use them, and I won't go into a carrier either; you have to come from a good home to get me to a vet.

About Mio

What life with Mio looks like

Mio is a adult european shorthair cat waiting at Dierentehuis Stevenshage Leiden in Leiden.

An adult cat usually shows their personality within a week. Give them a quiet room with everything they need (food, water, litter, hiding spot) and let them choose when to explore. Don't force interaction — every cat decides for themselves when a new home counts as home.

🇳🇱Adopting from Netherlands

Dutch shelters typically require a household assessment and an adoption contract. Animals are routinely sterilized, microchipped, and registered in the national pet database (NDG) before placement.

Frequently asked

Adopting Mio, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Mio?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dierentehuis Stevenshage Leiden handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Mio on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Mio if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dierentehuis Stevenshage Leiden will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Mio already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Mio isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dierentehuis Stevenshage Leiden early rather than rehoming privately; they know Mio and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
