Adopt Mira

Mixed Breed · Female · Adult · 5 years

Mira is a soulful dog whose partner is still waiting to be found. In March 2021, the abandoned female dog Mira came to us at the animal shelter after being purchased as a sweet puppy and passed on countless times when it was discovered how large she would grow and that, as a Kangal Mix, she certainly has her own unique perspective on the world. The first walking sessions with Mira were more like tug-of-war, and any other animal in sight was reason enough for another power struggle, not out of malice, but due to a lack of experiences in her life. With lots of practice, consistency, and routine, the walks have now become actual pleasant strolls, and towards "her" people, she suddenly revealed a completely different side of herself. A sensitive, warm-hearted Mira, who can indeed follow certain rules and can hardly control her joy when visitors she has taken to heart come by. She is a dog who doesn't necessarily need to be the center of attention but still wants to be part of things and can show herself to be a wonderful companion with a very close bond, based on mutual respect. Those interested in Mira should know that as a livestock guardian dog, she behaves differently in certain situations than one might be used to with their own dogs, and thus, as a human, you may need to learn some new approaches. However, once you have seen behind her facade, she is indeed readable and trainable, but with a lot of patience, understanding, and perseverance, as she is not a dog that can or should be forced into a mold. For Mira, a house with a large property is needed, which she will naturally guard well. Small children should not be in the household due to her size. For her walks, not only does she need a leash and harness, but also a muzzle, which she allows to be put on without any issues.

About Mira

What life with Mira looks like

Mira is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Forchheim in Forchheim.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Mira, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Mira?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Forchheim handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Mira on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Mira if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Forchheim will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Mira already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Mira isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Forchheim early rather than rehoming privately; they know Mira and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
