Mitchie

European Shorthair · Female · Adult · 4 years

Mitchie is a two-year-old cat. She was brought to us after her owner unfortunately passed away—yet she had been enjoying herself so much with her owner and in her previous environment. She absolutely loves playing outside and feels completely at home when she’s out there. She’s a true hunter, catching birds and playing with butterflies. A new owner shouldn’t mind that Mitchie is an excellent hunter. In the late afternoon, she comes inside and snuggles up on the couch alongside her owner. She doesn’t like being picked up and placed on someone’s lap, but she does enjoy being close by and feels comfortable in your presence. Often, just being near you is enough for her; extensive cuddle sessions aren’t necessary. When visitors come over, she actually enjoys their company and stays right by their side. Now that her familiar life has suddenly changed, she’ll need some time before she can feel relaxed and at ease again. The shelter—and especially the other cats—still seem quite exciting to her, and she’s not yet fully comfortable around them.

NL·Show original

About Mitchie

What life with Mitchie looks like

Mitchie is a adult european shorthair cat waiting at Dierentehuis Stevenshage Leiden in Leiden.

An adult cat usually shows their personality within a week. Give them a quiet room with everything they need (food, water, litter, hiding spot) and let them choose when to explore. Don't force interaction — every cat decides for themselves when a new home counts as home.

🇳🇱Adopting from Netherlands

Dutch shelters typically require a household assessment and an adoption contract. Animals are routinely sterilized, microchipped, and registered in the national pet database (NDG) before placement.

Frequently asked

Adopting Mitchie, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Mitchie?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dierentehuis Stevenshage Leiden handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Mitchie on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Mitchie if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dierentehuis Stevenshage Leiden will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Mitchie already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Mitchie isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dierentehuis Stevenshage Leiden early rather than rehoming privately; they know Mitchie and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
