Mitja

Mixed Breed · Male · Senior · 10 years

March 2021 November 2019 Mitja is a large male, like his brother Mato. He still has a lot of energy, but it is now a bit softer towards humans. He seeks human company when outdoors and loves being petted. Mitja shows typical behavior of a livestock guardian dog, but he is still a very friendly and human-oriented dog. A home of his own would be a great wish for him. Mitja wants to learn a lot, but needs experienced people who are familiar with livestock guardian dogs and their behavior. November 2018 Mitja is a bundle of energy and is understaffed at the shelter. He doesn't know where to put his energy, he needs to get out of the narrowness of the shelter, he wants to go out into the world, to people who will find a great companion in this young half-strong male with consistency and love. Mitja is willing to learn and work with his people. However, he is quite strong and quite stunning. Mija is more reserved than his brother Mato. In the relative safety of the shelter, he appears confident, but it is possible that he will "get very small" again outside his familiar environment. He knows nothing of the world and has to learn everything anew. He gets along well with his fellow dogs. Please read the information on deprivation syndrome. February 2018 February 2017 Mitja is a beautiful young male who loves people and is now looking for his own family. He is very cheerful and gets along well with all his fellow dogs. He would certainly like to be a second dog, to whom the way to a new life is shown. October 2016 All the puppies have survived the difficult baby time and are growing into charming little dogs. They are not afraid, but more or less reserved. Mitja is a beautiful, somewhat reserved male who will probably grow to a medium size. He is cautious with people, but gets along well with other dogs. August 4, 2016 The mayor of Ditrău called this morning that 4 puppies were wandering around a field. But there were 6 tiny (2-3 weeks old) puppies in the care of a male? We wonder, of course, where the mother dog is? The little ones are still too young to eat on their own. This will be a hard job for Levente and Agota again. Let's keep our fingers crossed that they all survive! The possible father is now castrated, but if we don't find out where the mother animal is, she will continue to produce puppies.

About Mitja

What life with Mitja looks like

Mitja is a large senior mixed breed dog waiting at Initiative Karpatenstreuner e.V. in Romania.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇷🇴Adopting from Romania

Romanian rescues handle the highest volume of cross-border adoptions in the EU. Animals are quarantined and fully vetted before transport. Reputable rescues maintain detailed health records and post-adoption follow-up.

Frequently asked

Adopting Mitja, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Mitja?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Initiative Karpatenstreuner e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Mitja on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Mitja if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Initiative Karpatenstreuner e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Mitja already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Mitja isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Initiative Karpatenstreuner e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Mitja and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
