Mona

Mixed Breed · Female · Senior · 16 years

Died on July 21, 2022 – In the summer of 2017, the founder agreed to take in a cat for about 3 weeks of vacation. The age of the spayed kitten is not exactly known, but it is probably somewhere between 12 to 16 years old. Mona is deaf (ear drums scarred and perforated), because ear infections were not properly diagnosed at an earlier time (repeated use of antibiotics, recurring ear infections). A specialist in ear-nose-throat in late 2017 determined that a food allergy was the cause. With special food, no further ear infections have occurred. Mona is still with the founder, but since December of last year, she has been living in her own room. She is stressed by other animals and will even attack them. At one point, she also showed signs of dementia (finding her way home, etc.). Now she lives in her room with a large window to the street without a yard. She has regular and sufficient human contact, unless she is sleeping, which she does very often. A check-up with the vet is scheduled again, but it is always accompanied by sedation, as she – likely due to earlier painful experiences – is very difficult to handle. Even a simple shaving of her leg for a blood draw results in biting and scratching as if it were a matter of life and death. A full grooming at home is also not possible. Fortunately, sedation is easier to administer to cats than to dogs. Unfortunately, Mona developed a tumor on her head in the spring of 2022, which has slowly but steadily grown larger. She is treated with pain medication as needed to optimize her quality of life. During a check-up with the vet in early July 2022, she was full of energy once again. She was not ready to go. On July 21, 2022, she clearly showed us that her time had come. So we went to the vet (Mona was there happily and felt very comfortable), and she made her last journey in our presence. Rest in peace, Mona.

Run free Mona.

About Mona

What life with Mona looks like

Mona is a medium-sized senior mixed breed cat waiting at Moiren Stiftung in Erlinsbach.

Senior cats are the gentlest house guests: predictable, mostly silent, and grateful for a sunny windowsill. Older cats often have minor dental or kidney issues — keep an eye on water intake and weight. Many sleep eighteen hours a day and want no part of any drama.

🇨🇭Adopting from Switzerland

Swiss shelters require a home visit (Platzkontrolle) and proof of suitable accommodation. Cantons each have their own additional dog-keeping requirements (e.g. SKN training in some areas). Animals leave sterilized and chipped.

Frequently asked

Adopting Mona, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Mona?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Moiren Stiftung handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Mona on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Mona if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Moiren Stiftung will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Mona already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Mona isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Moiren Stiftung early rather than rehoming privately; they know Mona and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
