Naomi

Mixed Breed · Female · Senior · 30 years

Completely emaciated and severely worm-infested – that’s how the young female dog Naomi showed up at an Oberpfälzer veterinarian. Currently, she is being lovingly cared for by her foster family. However, the health consequences of her difficult early months are now becoming apparent. The veterinarian saved Naomi’s life, and Carmen Baur from Tierhilfe Franken e.V. is certain: “The young female dog, which now joyfully jumps around her house, had a tough start in life.” “She was nothing but skin and bones.” Naomi was about 18 weeks old when her owner finally took her to the veterinarian. The female dog was not only severely underweight but also heavily worm-infested and had serious digestive issues. Naomi remained in the practice for three weeks, receiving repeated infusions. The entire team pampered her lovingly. Since her owners couldn’t afford the costs, the veterinarian took the dog in. When she was on the mend, the veterinarian finally handed Naomi over to Tierhilfe Franken e.V. Fortunately, the association found the perfect foster home for Naomi with Jutta Bauernschmitt: For nearly 30 years, she has bred Dobermans, and she knows the breed inside and out. Despite everything Naomi went through, she has always been a lively and open-minded “giant baby.” She still receives special food and stands out due to her “soft” build, a consequence of her difficult early months. “During the time when a dog’s body normally develops muscles, her body was focused on keeping her alive.” That her health was neglected in the early months is now unfortunately evident in various ways: A crack – a hairline fracture in the bone – has caused her to limp. Additionally, Naomi currently suffers from “Demodex,” a skin infection caused by mites. These mites are found in small numbers in almost all dogs, but Naomi’s immune system is too weak to fight the infection alone. And there’s another problem: Naomi suffers from “Cherry Eye” (nictitating membrane prolapse) in both eyes. The third eyelid of the dog pops out over the eye and doesn’t retract. This not only restricts Naomi’s vision but can lead to serious complications such as conjunctivitis, chronic dry eye, or irritation. Naomi is therefore to be operated on as soon as possible at an ophthalmology clinic. “She will unfortunately always be a construction site,” the Tierhilfe Franken e.V. assumes. From a personality perspective, however, Naomi is “like a lottery six!” The association faces high costs from previous treatments and the upcoming operation for Naomi. Therefore, they are asking for donations. Every contribution counts, even small amounts mean a lot to us.

About Naomi

What life with Naomi looks like

Naomi is a small senior mixed breed dog waiting at Tierhilfe Franken e.V. in Lauf.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Naomi, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Naomi?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierhilfe Franken e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Naomi on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Naomi if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierhilfe Franken e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Naomi already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Naomi isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierhilfe Franken e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Naomi and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
